Dear Parents and Students, It’s almost here! Our trip to Orlando, FL and the Disney Performing Arts Workshop “You’re Instrumental” is quickly approaching and I hope everyone is getting excited! Included below are a few bits and pieces of information that may help you to plan for a more pleasant trip.
Please go over carefully! We will have some flexibility in our schedule and may make changes in order to better accommodate our needs once we arrive in Florida. Be flexible.
Thursday, March 12th
5 – 7 pm All prescription and over the counter drugs are brought to the school by parents. Must be properly labeled and with the correct form. Must have a School Medication Authorization form for each prescription drug that you leave with us!
Friday, March 13th

Wednesday, March 18th
The average high for this time of year is 83 degrees. The average low is 60 degrees. It has gotten as high as 96 degrees and has gone as low as 38 degrees. Average rainfall for April is 2.42 inches. Make certain that you check the extended weather forecast before we go and pack accordingly.
Students will be responsible for four meals: Saturday Breakfast enroute to Orlando – Fast food Dinner at Downtown Disney Sunday Lunch at Blizzard Beach Monday Dinner at Disney World Park Tuesday Lunch or Dinner at Disney World Park Wednesday Possible breakfast stop You should probably allow $10.00 to $15.00 per meal for normal meals, not including snacks and souvenirs, depending on how your child eats. Food in the parks and in tourist areas is considerably more expensive.
Would also recommend that students carry a water bottle and possibly snacks into the parks. Refilling a water bottle is much less expesenive (and healthier) than buying soft drinks etc.
Transportation Between Parks
Disney Public Transportation Options: Magic Kingdom Monorail and bus Allow 30 minutes travel time to / from Ticket / Transportation Center EPCOT Monorail and bus Allow 30 minutes travel time to / from Ticket / Transportation Center Hollywood Studios Bus only Allow 1 hour travel time to / from Ticket / Transportation Center Animal Kingdom Bus only Allow 1 hour travel time to / from Ticket / Transportation Center May use our own busses to help facilitate transportation once we see which parks people want to go to on which days.
Chaperones There will be at least 16 chaperones and 7 Shelby County board employees traveling with the band. At all times students are to remain respectful to chaperones and to each other.
Know who your chaperone is!! They will be the one responsible for room checks as well as other check-in times throughout the course of this trip.
All medical forms, prescription drugs and over the counter drugs must be turned in by or on Thursday, March 12th from 5 – 7 pm. Parents are the only people who can turn in and pick up prescription and OTC drugs. Students are not allowed to have those in their possession at any time during the course of this trip. People will be here to inventory and label all drugs collected. Please read the medical forms and releases very carefully! Must have a School Medication Authorization form for each prescription drug that you leave with us!
Things to Remember
1. Instrument & Music 2. iPods etc. will be allowed but only with headsets. Please be advised that any media not conforming to the Shelby County Code of Conduct will taken up and returned only with a parent conference. 3. You may want to bring your own towels etc. Even though we are staying in a nice Motel they tend to run short of towels and hot water when school groups “invade”. 4. Luggage will be limited to one large piece. 5. Movies will be allowed on the bus. Must be rated G or PG (pending approval for PG movies) NO PG-13 MOVIES!! 6. Sunscreen
Whatever purchases you make must comply with the Shelby County Code of Conduct. Students may not purchase pocket knives etc or anything else that would be in violation of the Shelby County Schools Code of Conduct Chaperones may not purchase and / or hold these items for students as they are not allowed to have them either.
While we are in Florida we are to remain together as a group at all times! No one is to go off by him or herself for any reason! Since this is a school sponsored trip and we are representing Thompson High School, the City of Alabaster and the State of Alabama, all rules as stated in the Shelby County Code of Conduct will be in effect for the duration of the trip. All students (and adults) should at all time act like ladies and gentlemen as well as with class and dignity. We anticipate absolutely no problems, however a student may be sent home for the following reasons: 1. The use of or the suspected use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco products. 2. Being outside his or her room after curfew. 3. Extreme disrespect to director or chaperones. 4. Demonstrating a consistent disregard for school and band rules as well as failing to meet required expectations.
