IN THE AIRPORT… Passengers should arrive at the airport 2 hours before departure time. They have to check in and register their luggage. Most airports have at least 2 classes of travel, first class and economy class, which is cheaper. Each passenger of more than 2 years of age has a free luggage allowance. Generally this limit is 20 kg for economy class passengers and 30 kg for first class passengers. Excess luggage must be paid for. The rules for passengers who are going abroad are similar in most countries but sometimes there might be a small difference in formalities. If you are supposed to begin by going through the Customs, you should fill in the customs declaration before you talk to the customs officer. He can ask any passenger questions about declaring alcohol, tobacco, or gifts. Then you go to the check-in-counter, where your ticket is examined. The next formality is filling in the immigration form and going through passport control. You write your name, nationality, permanent address and the purpose of your trip. In most countries, there is also a security check when your carryluggage is inspected. This is an anti-hijacking measure, and anything that might be dangerous or disturbing to other passengers must be given to one of the crew and returned after the plane has reached its destination. After completing all these formalities, you go to the departure lounge, where you can have a snack, read a paper, and buy something in the duty-free shop while you wait for the announcement to board the plane. Some of these formalities are repeated when you arrive at your destination. The customs declaration and the immigration form are often filled in while on board the plane. At the airport you may be met by a specially trained dog to make sure that you are not carrying drugs, and the immigration officer might want to know on whose invitation you are coming, and whether you have a return ticket. There is one inconvenience you have to be prepared for when you are traveling long distances by plane. It’s the difference between the time you are used to, and the new local time. At first you won’t be feeling very well because of it, but don’t worry – it won’t take you long to get used to it. TRAVELING BY TRAIN There are many ways of traveling - by train, by plane, by boat, by walking. My sister's favorite way is traveling by plane, because she says it is exciting. And of course, the fastest way of traveling is by plane. Traveling by train is slower than by air, but it also has its advantages. With a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure.
If you are going to travel by train, you should buy your tickets in advance, especially in summer. At every train station, there are hundreds of people hurrying to catch their trains. You’ll waste a lot of time standing in line trying to buy a ticket. One of the main reasons people choose train travel is because it is cheap. Modern trains have comfortable seats in all passenger cars, and there are sleeping-cars and dining-cars which make even the longest trips enjoyable. You can buy first-class or second-class sleepers in a separate compartment. There are express, slow, and long-distance trains. If you want to go somewhere and get there as fast as possible you should know that express trains only stop at the largest stations, while slow trains stop at all stations. You can get to foreign countries only by taking a long-distance train. Some people forget which platform their train is going to leave from. They can always ask for the platform and train number at the information desk, and also get other information about the train schedules. While you are on the train you can read a newspaper, look out the window, drink tea, talk to your neighbors, or sleep. I prefer to look out of the window, because you can see the country you are passing through. When you are traveling by plane, you can only see the clouds. When you are on a train, you can see the beauty of nature. You can also get something to eat when the train makes a stop in a station. I envy people who can travel often and visit different parts of the world. They are interesting people who can tell you many things which you didn’t know before. Any kind of travel helps you to understand many things that you can never see or learn at home, although you can read about them in books and newspapers.
