New English Contemporary Ballet School
The School
New English Contemporary Ballet School is the only contemporary ballet school in the UK nested alongside its professional parent company. We are extremely proud of this relationship. It guarantees our students the close association with the industry that only a professional company can, supporting training, enhancing performance and creating career pathways and opportunities. The high level of training we provide will enable our students to engage with industry We are a company that looks, stylistically and technically, beyond the UK and is committed to bringing high-calibre work by major European choreographers to this country. New English Contemporary Ballet enjoys a reputation for providing opportunities for its dancers to excel, working alongside choreographers of exceptional quality. This company of soloist dancers are at the very forefront of the evolving contemporary ballet scene within the UK. We show work that clearly places dance as the principal focus of our performances, work which is equally contemporary and equally ballet. The company encourages its dancers to travel beyond the traditional boundaries of their art form and asks them to perform as artists capable of accepting a wide range of physical and stylistic challenges. This reflects my long-held view that a rigorously-trained dancer should be able to work within the technical and artistic demands of any dance genre. Niall McMahon Artistic Director New English Contemporary Ballet

Introducing the

Our Parent Company
New English Contemporary Ballet is renowned for its high artistic and technical standards and for presenting ambitious and exhilarating dance performances to audiences across the UK.

at the highest possible level; students will graduate with qualifications that are recognised and respected. Above all, our students will become rounded artists and performers, dancers capable of offering employers the level of versatility required, rather than “boxing” or labeling them and thus limiting their true potential. The depth and quality of our courses provide a complete preparation for entering the world of professional dance performance and West End Musical Theatre.

By opening the school, the New English Contemporary Ballet has continued to go from strength to strength. It absolutely delights me to know that we can offer young dance students a home where they are able to train in excellence, and fulfil their ambition of becoming the very best that they can be. It is a great honour and a pleasure to be Patron of the New English Contemporary Ballet School. I hope that in supporting NECBS, I can offer some inspiration and guidance for these young students at the start of their careers, who have all demonstrated the potential talent and qualities it takes to make it in the Craig Revel Horwood performing arts industry.

Craig Revel Horwood
Craig’s professional training began in his hometown of Ballarat, Australia. He later moved to Melbourne and appeared in productions including West Side Story, the Australian and New Zealand tour of The Danny La Rue Show, La Cage Aux Folles, Me And My Girl, Olympus On My Mind, Sugar Babies, Jack And The Beanstalk and Ladies Night. On arriving in Europe Craig joined the famous company at the Lido Du Paris as a dancer in Panache and then as principle singer in Formidable at the Moulin Rouge, finding himself a year later in the UK tour of Cats in Edinburgh and Dublin. In the West End, Craig has performed in Cats, playing the part of ‘Munkustrap’ at the New London Theatre,

Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane as Dance Captain and was an original cast member playing the part of ‘Harry’ and Dance Captain of Crazy For You at the Prince Edward Theatre. This took him to New York and Baltimore in the USA then to Germany at the Schiller Theatre, Berlin. Craig then went on to re-create the show for Susan Stroman in South Africa. Television credits include Children In Need, TV-AM, the 1992 Royal Variety Command Performance for the BBC at the Dominion Theatre and the 1993 Laurence Olivier Awards. Since the end of 1994, Craig concentrated on his directorial and choreographic career, but in recent years, has made a return to the small screen, appearing as a judge on the hit TV series Strictly Come Dancing for the BBC.

Richard Wherlock
Richard Wherlock was born in Bristol, UK. After studying at London’s prestigious Ballet Rambert School he joined their company as a dancer. Wherlock was Ballet Director at Hagen Theatre in Germany from 1991 to 1996, then spent three seasons as director of the Lucerne Ballet before moving to Komische Oper, Berlin as artistic director and choreographer of BerlinBallett. He has been director and head choreographer of Ballett Basel since the 2001/2002 season, and artistic director of the renowned festival, Basel tanzt, since 2004. He has worked as choreographer with the companies Tanzforum Köln, Ballet de la Normandie, Scapino Ballet, Rotterdam, English Dance Theatre, Finnish Dance Theatre, Helsinki, Ballett Staatstheater, Braunschweig, Zürcher Ballett Juniors, Romanian National Ballet, Innsbrucker Ballett at Tiroler Landestheater, The Icelandic Ballet, Ballet National de Nancy et de Lorraine, Ballet National de Marseille, Ballet de l’Opéra de Nice, aalto ballett theatre, Essen, Europa Danse (Unesco), Ballett der Deutschen Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf, Singapore Dance Theatre, Ballett der Vereinigten Bühnen, Graz, Introdans in Arnhem, Holland, Ballett des Badischen Staatstheaters, Karlsruhe and Ballet Contemporaneo del Teatro, San Martin/ Argentina. He has also created a full-length ballet for Les Etoiles de l’Opéra National de Paris.

The standard of training at the New English Contemporary Ballet School is second to none. I am proud to be associated with a school that will doubtless, in a very short time, become the flagship of it’s type in the UK, and probably worldwide.

Tour Programme

For the 2009 season will include 3 World premieres and 1 UK premiere, we will once again break away from traditional narrative ballet associated with small and middle-scale touring. NECB continues to develop its celebrated link with Richard Wherlock (Ballett Basel) performing the much acclaimed Running Red. We have also commissioned a brand new piece by Patrick Delcroix (Nederlands Dans Theater) – his previous work for the company received outstanding reviews in 2007. Davide Bombana’s highly emotional In C Sharp Minor will appear again in the spring programme. A world premiere has been commisioned by Thomas Noone; the highly charged, physical nature of his choreography will add a new dimension to the established repetoire of the company. Jamie Thomson (newly appointed as the company’s Resident Choreographer) will create a new work for the autumn phase of the tour. A full list of the dates and contact details for all venues will be available on our website which is updated regularly (The list includes dates agreed at the time of going to press).
