After reading English/American Literature at Warwick University (1979-82), I trained as a theatre director at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (1983-84). I was assistant director to John Dexter (1984-85) and to Nick Barter at the Unicorn Theatre for Children, London (1985-86). A graduate of the National Film and Television School and the Maurits Binger Film Institute in Amsterdam, Simon has worked since 1984 in theatre, TV and film as a writer, director, actor, teacher and script consultant. The first UK participant on North by Northwest’s Seven Samurai initiative, he is a screenwriting tutor on the 2004 ‘East of Eden’ programme for writers, directors & producers working in 6 emerging European countries. Senior tutor on the First Film Foundation’s First Development and Jerwood Shorts scriptwriting programmes, he also runs innovative 5-day scene-writing workshops for screenwriters with a range of experience. Simon is currently tutoring on First Film’s Development Plus programme, an initiative supported by the UK Film Council to improve the skills of people working in feature film script development. He works regularly as a script consultant on feature projects in Europe and USA and is also guest tutor at Leeds Metropolitan University, Scottish Screen, Screen Yorkshire, NorthWest Vision, and on Arista’s international ADEPT programmes in Italy and Australia. In July Simon taught an acclaimed series of short film masterclasses in New Zealand, sponsored by the British Council, the New Zealand Film Commission and Fulbright NZ. He has written 9 feature scripts and his original screenplay BONEY AND BETSY is in development with the UK Film Council.
