Theatre and teaching in government secondary school – art and design). ART SKILLS Collage, drawing, mixed media, murals, painting, photography, printmaking, textiles. AREAS OF WORK Adult education, community arts, exhibiting, lecturing, primary and secondary education (including infant , junior and middle schools), special needs teaching (adults and children), public & private commissions, residencies, tertiary education, workshops. INTERESTS Healthcare arts, new technologies, practice-based research, public art, visual arts consultancy, working with architects, ceramics, digital art, sculpture, video. LANGUAGES SPOKEN English, French. ARTIST’S STATEMENT My paintings (oil, acrylic, mixed media on canvas and wood) and oil & acrylic monoprints on paper are concerned with the use of metaphor for landscape. Observations of the changing nature of the skies, seas, lakes, flora and fauna has led to a shorthand of markmaking, with a sense of a location. I ‘translate’ the preliminary studies made on site into a more spontaneous process in my studio (both on a smaller and larger scale) – leading to paintings that represent transition in my own life. I am particularly inspired by cliff top walks, where there is a sense of infinity, lake reflections and the intimate feeling of a beautiful sunset. My most recent body of work ‘takes’ reference from the erosion seen on beaches/cliff faces of North Yorkshire. Reusing envelopes, newspaper, scrap paper and other discarded materials (leather, wool, etc.) is my way of ‘giving back’ to nature. Though I use dye, acrylic or oils to ‘paint’ the paper pulp, where possible I allow the dyes within the materials to show through. I would like to think that the time I spent living in Zambia, Southern Africa in the 1970’s has helped me to be more resourceful, less wasteful. ABOUT ME Interests include singing, walking in the landscape, listening to music (classical, popular and gospel) and dancing. Other interests include: travel, conservation issues, writing (diaries, research & poetry), reading, watching African dance and modern ballet (e.g. Rambert), attending cinema and theatre performances, acting & swimming.
