Nation-wide, since 1962, has helped to conserve over
2.6 million acres
Provincially, since 1994, has helped to conserve
12,356 acres (6,627 acres titled)

         Past Cooperative Projects
•   Worked together on science and stewardship (not land
    acquisition)
•   Ecological Reserves such as King George IV, Cape St.
    Mary’s, Burnt Cape

Labrador Conservation Blueprint (2009 – 2012)
Why a Reid Lot near Red Indian
           Lake?
Gov of NL stated objective to protect
representative examples of each distinct
region the Province
Red Indian Lake region under represented
Highest concentration of Reid Lots
Biologically diverse and important region
for species at risk
1 out of 16 Reid Lots – effective “balance”
     Win-Win-Wilderness?
Red Indian Lake region protected
NCC provide Government with $1M for
local communities, etc.
Government would save cost of establishing
reserve
NCC does not restrict access to areas,
hunting permitted
