A Slow Revolution: maternity leave, women and work

Associate Professor Marian Baird University of Sydney
The Clare Burton Lecture is an annual ATN WEXDEV* event and honours the significant contribution made by the late Clare Burton to gender equity and organisational change in higher education and other areas. Proceeds from this event are th donated to the Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship Fund. To celebrate the 10 lecture in the Clare Burton Memorial Lecture Series and in recognition of the passionate aims of Clare Burton for a more just and equal society, Associate Professor Marian Baird will present “A Slow Revolution: maternity leave, women and work”. Why did it take so long for women in Australia to achieve paid maternity leave – and what happens next? The lecture analyses changes in Australia’s attitudes to working women by examining maternity leave policies from 1979, when the first unpaid maternity leave decision of the Industrial Relations Commission was made, to the government’s announcement of a national system of paid parental leave on Mother’s Day in 2009. From 1 Jan 2010, working parents will also have the right to request an additional 12 months of unpaid parental leave and the right to request flexible working arrangements. These are significant, even revolutionary, policy changes in Australia. What will be the implications of these changes, for employers and for working parents, particularly women? The lecture proposes answers to these questions and argues that the revolution needs to continue – but at a faster pace and with broader impact. Marian Baird is Associate Professor in Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney and Director of the Women and Work Research Group. Her research has focussed on the impact of regulatory and policy environment’s on women’s working lives and conditions. Based on her research, Marian has most recently been a key advocate of paid maternity leave in Australia. She has also published on the impact of regulation on low paid women and the changes to Australia’s industrial relations regime. *ATN WEXDEV: Australian Technology Network of Universities, Women’s Executive Development Clare Burton Memorial Lecture, Perth Information Date: Time: Venue: Cost: Parking: Friday 16 October, 2009 12.00 - 2.30pm (Registration from 11:45am) Argyle Room, Parmelia Hilton Perth. 14 Mill St, Perth WA 6000 $80pp or $590 for a table of 8 (Inc GST).
