Signs That You May Have a Drainage Problem

Not all homeowners understand how important it is to have proper drainage systems in their yards.
What looks like few annoying puddles in the yard can actually turn out to be a complete nightmare
later on. There are a number of signs that would help you figure out that you have a drainage
problem. Below we will discuss those signs so that you can take care of the problem before it gets
bigger.

Puddles That Won’t Go Away

If you want to look for outdoor signs, start from those basic puddles that won’t go away. Whether it
is your yard, lawn or any other part of the house where there is mud or grass and water stays for a
long time; you have a drainage problem. There may be several reasons behind water puddles one of
which includes the issue that the yard or surface is not properly sloped.

Erosion against Foundation

You should take a close look at your foundation slabs. Note down the level of soil. Do the same after
the next rain and note whether or not the water filled up against the foundation and wash the soil
away. Also note how long the water remains after rain. If the water is present, it is a clear sign that
your yard is not properly draining. This is a dangerous situation as sitting water up against a
foundation can cause extra pressure, which may cause cracking.

Puddles in Crawl Space

When most people think of a crawl space, they cringe. This is because of the reason that a common
perception is that crawlspaces are dark, moist and creepy places where spiders, rats and other
rodents lurk. However, you would be surprised to know that this is actually not the reality and a
crawlspace is supposed to be clean and dry all year round. If your crawlspace is not clean and dry, it
means you have an issue inside it and there isn’t enough air passing through it. Bigger problem is
puddles in the crawl space. If you see puddles in there, be worried because your drainage systems
aren’t working or clogged.

Bowing Floors

Many houses shift after several years of its construction. If your house has also started to shift, it is
because of the reason that you have a poor drainage system. While poor drainage can cause your
house to shift, it can also move your floor tiles as well, which is apparently a serious issue. What’s
even a bigger problem is that your boards can start popping up too. You would notice the popping
up of tiles as soon as they have been affected near the doors because the doors will stop shutting
correctly.

Thus these are some of the major signs of drainage problem. If you notice that your house has these
signs, it is time to get help. Call a drainage contractor who will give you consultation regarding your
drainage issues. After contacting a drainage contractor your problem will soon be fixed.
