YWPS Newsletter

                                   Message From the Principal
Congratulations to all those who participated in the Yarraville Festival last weekend. We have been active
participants in this festival for a number of years .
Our children performed as a choir and also received awards for films presented at the Flick Fest held at the
Sun Theatre. To all those parents and teachers who supported our kids, a very big THANK YOU.

In my first Newsletter message to you, I made the suggestion that you deliver and collect your children from
school by parking maybe 200 metres away from the school and walking the rest of the way - a big thank you
to the growing number of parents doing just that! I regularly suggest this in an effort to help clear the traffic
‘chaos’ that inevitably occurs around 9am and 3.30pm.
This fortnight I need to make the point again - continue to consider this option and if not, please use our
'drop-off' zone as it's intended to be used.
The ‘drop off’’ area outside the main doors to the school is a major concern. Please note that you cannot
park and leave your car in this area - it is only a DROP OFF area. When you do other parents wanting to
drop off are queued down the street and this is when chaos reins! If you want to stop the car and then
accompany your children into school, you need to find a legitimate place to park.
Double parking while children slalom their way between both parked and moving cars is another practice
that sends me grey.
Please think about my ‘walking’ suggestion. Like you, the safety of the kids is my top priority.

And as another reminder, please ensure your children have enough food to get them from 11.40 to 1.40.
Some children are not eating very much at the first break and are then famished by the time 1.40 rolls
around. This new timetable has been designed to give children maximum learning time, but we need to
ensure they have enough sustenance to see them through.

5/6 Camp News
You have until this Monday to return the permission note with the deposit of $100. We already have had
many returns – thanks. As soon as we have our final numbers we can start organising cabin and activity
groups for camp. If you have any questions, please speak to Simone or your classroom teacher.

Schools Clean Up Australia Day, Friday 28th February
We have participated in this for over ten years now. Each grade will spend half an hour cleaning up an
allocated area of the schoolgrounds, skate park or oval. Our message is the impact that rubbish has on our
environment – rubbish dropped on the ground gets into roadside drains and ends up in our waterways and the
sea. We need to look after our marine animals! Please ensure that your child is wearing covered shoes and
has a hat for the Clean Up Day.

Visual Arts 2013
Over the last few weeks, students have been coming to the Art Room full of enthusiasm and energy to learn
how to draw. It’s been fantastic to see a child’s face light up and so eager to learn.
Children from Prep – 6 have been learning how to make marks and that they can be made with a media or
tool. Children have been describing the marks they have made, e.g. smeary marks, jagged marks, spotty
marks.
Students are beginning to develop awareness by looking and discussing how they use lines, shapes, colours,
marks and patterns in drawings. They have been looking at Artists as well. The students from Prep-2 have
been making descriptive pictures using their own language. They have been using their imagination, “Here is
a mark. “What can I turn it into? What does it remind me of?” It’s certainly made us smile, seeing their
minds at work.
Pupils are enjoying their work on display. They have celebrating and sharing their work with others. Come
and see some of the children’s work in the foyer outside the Art Room. We aim to display each grades work
throughout the year.

I'm being brave and doing the World's Greatest Shave!
My name is Violeta. I am the parent of Chris 5/6 Mary and I also do book club at school.

I’m  writing  to  ask  you  to  support  me  in  the  Leukaemia  Foundation’s  World’s  Greatest  Shave.

That’s  right,  I’m  being  brave  and  shaving my hair (approximately 78cm) for  the  World’s  Greatest  Shave  in
March!

Today, 31 Australians will get the news they have blood cancer. Your donation will help the Leukaemia
Foundation to fund its important work – providing practical and emotional support to people with blood
cancer, as well as investing millions in research.

I am grateful to have a healthy family that has not been affected by Leukaemia. There are a lot of people that
do not have the choice of losing their hair and some do not get it back. I have the choice and choose to do
the shave to help those who are brave and battle on with their conditions

It’ll  change  my  life  – so please sponsor me and help change the lives of people with blood cancer. Your
donation helps the Leukaemia Foundation provide free services to support people with leukaemia,
lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders, and their families, as well as research to improve blood
cancer treatments and find cures.

It all adds up, so please sponsor me online. Anything over $2 is tax deductible!

Find me at www.worldsgreatestshave.com and  sponsor  me  online  with  your  credit  card.    You’ll  receive  an
official tax-deductible receipt by email.

If you prefer you can send me a cheque or give me a cash donation when you see me next (I have official
receipts to give out). I will be setting up a donation box in the office. Please remember any donation
SMALL or BIG will help.

The shave will be done at a public event on 16th March 2014 at 67 Anderson street, Yarraville.

I really appreciate your support. Hope to see you all on the 16th
