PTW ‘08 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR HOUSING HOSTS WHAT IS PERFORMING THE WORLD? Performing the World is an international gathering of people who are using performance, play and innovative practice for social change. Over the last 8 years, this gathering has evolved into a global community of practitioners, professionals, scholars, artists, educators and community activists. Please see the website http://www.performingtheworld.org for more information on the upcoming conference which will be held October 2-5, 2008. This year we are dramatically enhancing the Performing the World experience by having our guests (approximately 300) house with New York residents. We are very excited about the community building prospects of New Yorkers opening up their homes to guests from around the country and around the world. IS IT EXPECTED THAT I ATTEND THE CONFERENCE? We would love to have you attend the conference but you do not have to attend in order to be a housing host. WHAT WILL BE REQUIRED OF ME AS A HOST? WILL I NEED TO FEED MY GUESTS OR SHOW THEM AROUND NEW YORK? As a host we are asking you to open up your home by offering a place to sleep and shower. You are not expected to provide meals. Your guest(s) will be at the conference locations most of each day. We do ask that you provide towels and bedding. We want everyone to gain from the experience by getting to know each other. You can get involved as much as you want. Remember that some of our guests have never been to the US or NY before, so it is always greatly appreciated when you explain how to buy a Metrocard and use the subway, or how to use the public phones. These small bits of information make a big difference to new visitors from around the world. WHAT IS THE PROCESS IF I DECIDE TO BE A HOST? WHEN WILL I KNOW WHO MY GUESTS ARE? We will send you a questionnaire to fill out so that we know what kind of host accommodations you are able to provide and what your needs are. As requests for housing come in from the participants we will do our best to make a good match with the information the participants and the hosts have provided. Once we make a match, the guest will contact you by email or phone so that you are in contact with each other beforehand. During the months prior to the event we are expecting to have a gathering of hosts so that we can meet each other and answer any questions you might have. You can contact us at any time if you have any questions. WILL WE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WE HOST? Each application will have the participant’s country, age, occupation, etc. We will share this information with you. Past participants have been between 18 and 70, from 25 different countries, and most states across the US-- with backgrounds in such fields as education, health, government, theater, psychology, youth development, social service, and community development. We will also ask you for your preferences for guests. Once we have matched you with your guest, you will be able to connect with them directly (and even share pictures). WHY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR HOUSING THIS WAY? HAVE YOU DONE THIS BEFORE? We have been hosting people on a smaller scale for 20 years. It is a great way to build community and bring the world together. Our hosts have reported how gratifying their experiences have been and our guests have reported how much it meant to them to meet and stay in someone's home. The other reason we are doing this is because New York hotels are prohibitive in cost, which is why many conferences are not held here. We are keeping the cost of this conference affordable so more people can participate. WILL YOU COVER ANY EXPENSES? There will not be any financial compensation, but there will be a lot of gratification and many new friendships. DO YOU SCREEN THE ATTENDEES BEFORE YOU OFFER HOUSING? While we do not screen those requesting housing, this conference is attended by serious, concerned youth and adults. For the last seven years we have had an excellent track record of quality relationship building. Our housing hosts have always had positive experiences. Please understand that Performing the World and the sponsoring organizations, All Stars Project, Inc. and East Side Institute, no Inc., cannot assume liability for any injury to your person or property that occurs as a result of, or in the course of, your participation as a housing host. I CAN ONLY BE AROUND AT CERTAIN TIMES; DO I NEED TO LET GUESTS IN AND OUT? DO I PROVIDE A KEY?. Some hosts may be comfortable with giving a key, and others not – it’s up to you. Your guest’s schedule will be full with conference activities and sightseeing. Work out what works best for you. Please be sure everyone in your household is aware that there will be a guest during this time. DO I NEED TO LIVE NEAR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION? Easy access to public transportation would be very helpful and most cost-effective. CAN I ASK SOMEONE I KNOW IF THEY CAN BE A HOST TOO? Sure! If you know of others who might be interested, please have them contact us.
