All Pastors and Pastoral Administrators, Campus Ministers (NCSU and UNC-CH only), BAA General Chairpersons John Riedy, 2009 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Chair October 23, 2008 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Target Letter Program

I write to invite and urge you to participate in the Target Letter Program phase of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal campaign in your parish. The Target Letter program has proven to be extremely effective for those who have utilized this service in prior years. Using it in the four years I chaired the campaign at St. Raphael’s, I credit it with turning our parish from several years of failure to meet goal to consistently exceeding goal by substantial margins. I offer to go to your parish to show you and your leadership people how it works and how you can use it. Needless to say, I’m really high on this program. The target letter program is designed to contact all registered parishioners of your parish, thank them for previous gifts and suggest a specific gift for the current Appeal. There are five letters we recommend the parish utilize:  Major gift letter to previous donors of $400+  Prospective major gift letter to previous donors of $350+  Previous contributor letter to all those who gave less than $350 in the past  Increased contribution letter for those who gave $50 or less (inviting $75 gift)  Non contributor letter for new parishioners and previous non contributors to the BAA All of these letters, edited and approved by the parish, are prepared by the diocese and go out over the pastor’s signature. DETAILS: We print your target letters, including signature, on 8 ½ x 14” BAA letterhead, including an attached preprinted pledge card. We will also fold the letters and insert them into #10 window envelopes that the parish provides, and then return them to the parish for mailing. If you prefer to sign your letters by hand, we will return the printed letters to you unfolded, and there is no need to give us envelopes. If you wish to have a Raleigh area printer print and deliver envelopes to the Catholic Center for you, we suggest you contact Chris at Graphic Master, 919-872-8688. Attached are this year’s five sample letters. You adapt any of these letters to fit your parish, or you may compose your own. Each letter is personalized and asks the individual to consider a specific gift to the BAA based on the individual’s previous gift. The increased gift suggestion usually is determined by a percentage increase that you choose, generally 5-10%. Letters can be personalized with a formal (Mr. and Mrs.) or informal (John and Mary) salutation. If you prefer, we have the capability to scan the pastor’s or pastoral administrator’s signature. We have the signatures from last year on-file. If sending a signature to be scanned, please ensure the signature is written with a fine black felt-tip pen, or email the image to rusin@raldioc.org. As mentioned above, we strongly encourage all parishes to utilize this program. Please fill out the attached information request form and return it to us via mail, fax or e-mail by November 11. If you do have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Please remember, the absolute deadline to submit envelopes for participation is November 21st. You may wish to bring them with you to one of the Regional Training sessions!

Parish, Town
January, 2009 «AddressBlock» Dear Name, “Be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share” (1 Timothy 6:18). This is the theme for our 2009 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Our works of grace, generosity of our time, talent and treasure, and our sharing of God’s gifts help us to become one unified body to serve our Lord. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has proclaimed this year as the year to celebrate the life and sacrifices of Saint Paul. Central to Saint Paul’s writings is the theme that we, though many, are one body. Once a year, Bishop Burbidge calls upon us to act as one as we share our bounty to help those in need across our Diocese and to further the cause of Christ Jesus. Through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, your sacrificial gift and those of others in our parish and across the Diocese provides assistance to prepare candidates for the Priesthood and the Permanent Diaconate. Your support enables Catholic Charities to offer counseling and assistance to over 45,000 people annually, needs we know only increase every year. Essential programs that are also funded by your generosity include outreach to our Catholic college students, Diocesan coordination of Catholic formation and education, and support of our two Diocesan retreat centers. This year the opportunity presents itself again to heed God’s call to be good stewards of all that God has provided us, so that as a united Diocese we may truly be “rich in good works, generous, and ready to share.” Soon you will receive in the mail a brochure detailing the many good works that your participation helps support. Bishop Burbidge and I are most grateful for your previous gift of $«BAA2008» made to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, yet another example of your steadfast generosity to your Church. This year, I ask that you consider making a pledge of $<2008+%>, a slight increase over your previous contribution. Your continued partnership in this year’s BAA is very much appreciated, and is important as another means of sharing in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Thank you for your sacrificial gift. Sincerely in Christ,

Name Pastor (Pastoral Administrator)

Please make checks payable to “Bishop’s Annual Appeal”. Please return this pledge form to your parish.

A pre-printed tear-off reply form is attached at the bottom of this page.

(Letter to New Parishioners or Previous Non-Donors) Soon you will receive in the mail a brochure detailing the many good works that your participation would help support. Perhaps you are new to this parish; I hope you have found a spiritual home here. Perhaps you have been a parishioner for a while now, but have not yet taken an opportunity to make a pledge. Whatever your situation, I invite you to join your fellow parishioners and a gift this year. Please consider spreading your gift out over several months, for instance, a $25 initial gift and 6 monthly gifts of $25 would make a generous contribution of $175. Whatever response you are able to offer, I appreciate your ongoing commitment to Christ and His Church in our parish and in our Diocese of Raleigh.
