The allergic diseases are an increasing sanitary problem in countries with an western-style life, reaching a prevalence of about 20% of the whole population, with a peak of about 30% in paediatric ages. Specific immunotherapy by sublingual route represents the most advanced therapeutical approach, as recognized by recent WHO Position Papers, with a relevant value in preventing the worsening of the allergic sensitizations. In present meeting, the following topics will be dealt in depth:  The criteria for the performance of sublingual immunotherapy (allergy vaccination) with the best results both as regards efficacy and safety; the results of double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trials will be discussed. The allergy vaccination in children, with a special regard to its preventive activity, i.e. its capacity to interrupt the “allergic march”.

 

The physico-chemical and immunological characteristics of sublingual allergoid, which represents at present the most advanced tool for the sublingual allergy vaccination.  The immunological effects of sublingual allergy vaccination, with a particular regard to the mucosal immunity, which is involved in the mechanism of action.   Some particular aspects of the clinical practice in this field, e.g. the new shortened posological schedules. Elements of pharmacoeconomics, analysing the advantages of allergy vaccination, whose effects are long lasting after stopping, compared to the symptomatic drug treatments, which must be administered everlastingly.

In the Round Table Italian and Mexican attendees will exchange daily experiences on sublingual immunotherapy with monomeric allergoid.

Aims of the Meeting
To focus the recent criteria for the allergy vaccination, both in adults and children; to improve the knowledge of its mechanism of action; to learn the most recent evidences for an improved treatment.

Characteristics of participants
Allergy specialists from Italy and Mexico interested in updating their knowledge in allergy vaccination and in exchanging their clinical experiences.
