The south China Sea region is estimated to hold large oil and gas reserves. According to a Chinese estimate, the total hydrocarbon reserves in the Spratly Island chain would be around 225 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Of these, 70 percent is estimated to be natural gas, which would amount to 900 trillion cubic feet. The total South China Sea region is expected to have about 2,000 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
