FROM YOUR FINANCE COMMITTEE Offertory Collection: Electronic Funds Transfer: $ 8,636.00 $ 978.50 $ 9,614.50 Thank you for your continued generosity! This weekend, November 21 & 22, the Archdiocese of Boston will take up the Collection for Retired Sisters. The Archdiocese of Boston has been blessed with many schools, hospitals and social service agencies. The common denominator in the history of these institutions is the dedicated service of Sisters who gave themselves untiringly to the service of the Church. Through this collection, the Archdiocese will remember those Sisters who have served so faithfully and are now retired. This is “A Moment of Thanks for a Lifetime of Service.” Our 3rd season of ARISE has finished and we thank all of you who shared in this wonderful 6 week session. Many thanks to our small group facilitators and those of you who opened your homes and mostly your hearts. We thank God for the 170 people who participated and hope many more will join us in Season 4 which will take place in March. We will be closing our season with an invitation to join our Adult Penance Service on Tuesday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the main church. If you have any questions, please call Jane at 781-545-3335 x 212 or Michelle x 217. R.C.I.A/Adult Faith Formation This week's RCIA session will meet Sunday evening, November 22 at 7:30 in the Parish Center's Resource Room. Our topic this week will be Advent and the Liturgical Calendar, and we hope also to have a tour of the Church. These sessions are intended primarily for those preparing to enter the church next Easter, but anyone is welcome to attend if you are interested in learning more about your faith. RCIA will not meet on Sunday, November 29 due to the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. St. Vincent de Paul Conference will meet this Monday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. Next weekend, November 28 & 29 is the First Sunday of Advent. We are pleased to pass out the Magnificat Advent Companion at all the masses which contains daily readings for the Advent Season. We ask that you only take one per family. Thank you. Parish Offices will be closed Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. In case of an emergency, please call 781-5453335 and follow the instructions. Reminder: the daily mass on Thanksgiving will be at 8:00 a.m. instead of 7:30 a.m. The Vocation Cross Program: The Vocation Cross is available for any and all parishioners interested in praying for an increase in religious vocations. To reserve the cross for one week, please sign the sheet at the entrance to the church. The Vocation Committee THE BAPTISM MINISTRY is in need of volunteers who enjoy sewing. Can you make the tiny white garments that are given to the babies on their baptismal day? The pattern is small and easy to sew. For more information, please contact Stephanie Whelan 781-545-3335 x 220. PASTOR’S CORNER This Thursday our nation celebrates Thanksgiving, a beautiful tradition that goes back to 1621 when the Pilgrims gave thanks to God for their first harvest and for their very survival, a survival made possible by the assistance given to them by the Native Americans, who taught them how to harvest foods in this new land. To show their appreciation to the local inhabitants, they were invited to take part in this great communal feast, where fifty-three pilgrims entertained and feasted with ninety Native Americans for three days. Over the years other traditions were added to this holiday, first nationalized in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln, most notably annual football rivalries that exist throughout the country. Despite the various adaptations added to Thanksgiving, it remains a day in which we gather with family and friends to thank God for all the blessings we have received throughout the year. Thanksgiving is also a time when we reach out and assist those less fortunate by donating food items, as well as preparing and serving food to them. There are many organizations in our area that gather food and coordinate outreach. We are blessed to have an active St. Vincent de Paul Society that performs charitable works not only for Thanksgiving, but throughout the year. Besides gathering and distributing food, they also collect used clothing and provide other means of assistance to help those in need. Nearly 400 years later we like the Pilgrims have much to be thankful for here in Scituate just up the coast from Pilgrim Plantation, the site of that first Thanksgiving. We are blessed with many caring families and a strong sense of community that looks beyond itself to share its material blessings with those less fortunate. As we start Thanksgiving, what better way to give thanks to God than by attending morning Mass, which starts at 8 am? Afterwards there will be plenty of time to take in the Scituate/Hingham football game, to visit family and friends, and to put the finishing touches on the Thanksgiving feast. While you are giving thanks remember to thank God for the many men and women serving in our armed forces and are far from home and family. Their sacrifice makes our celebration possible. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and travel safely. GO SAILORS beat Hingham! Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. ARCHDIOCESAN MARRIAGE PREPARATION PILOT PROGRAM WHEN: TIME: WHERE: COST: Sat., December 5 & Sun., December 6 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (both days, includes Sunday Mass) The Pastoral Center in Braintree $225/couple (Registration by Nov. 23: $195) SUNSET POINT VACATION HOUSE In the Psalms we hear the words, “How can I thank you Lord, for all the good you have done for me?” As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, many of us reflect on these or similar words, even in times that are as challenging as life is currently for all too many. So often we discover the things we are most grateful for are not material blessings, but memories of family and friends, the times we spend with the people we love or doing the things we enjoy doing, or the people or events that have touched our lives. These recollections may be recent memories or may be from days and years past. Perhaps as we remember and give thanks this year, we may want to create similar memories for others. One way we can do this is by sponsoring a young child to attend camp next summer at the Vacation House at Sunset Point in Hull. People can sponsor a young child anywhere from one day ($75) to one week ($375). Information and sponsor forms are available in the entrances of the church and chapel and it is a way that individuals or groups can help create lifetime memories for these children. Please consider giving a child a day or week at camp and know you are giving the gift of a lifetime. Please manifest in your church the Spirit whom you also abundantly bestowed on your apostles. Call very many to priesthood and religious life. May zeal for your glory and for the salvation of the world inflame those you have chosen. May they be saints in your likeness. May our Holy Spirit strengthen them. May they be priests and religious according to your own heart. Amen. WOULD YOU PRAY FOR A PRIEST EACH DAY? The Monthly Prayer Request for Priests (MPRP) is an international apostolate which was founded in 1990 to encourage people to support Catholic priests by prayer and sacrifice. Each diocese prays for its own priests. Each day of the year bears the name of a priest from that diocese, obtained from the diocesan directory. Thus, by means of a calendar, the faithful are united in offering prayer and sacrifice for the particular “priest of the day,” always remembering to include a general intention of prayer for all priests of the diocese and around the world. The December & January MPRP calendars for the Archdiocese of Boston are available in the entrances of the church and chapel. Won’t you join in praying for a priest a day?
