Growth and Development Rationale

The Human Growth and Development unit in
the Thompson Brook School addresses issues
 associated with human growth, adolescent
 physiological and emotional changes, the
 human reproductive system, and societal
issues in an organized manner in grades five
 and six.
Why Teach About Puberty and
Reproduction?

l Puberty can be an exciting yet bewildering time.
Young people going through puberty may wonder if
they’re normal, why they’re still treated as though
they are children, and what is happening to their
  bodies.

l Clear information on the physical, social and
emotional aspects of puberty, presented in an active
learning process, helps clear up students’
misconceptions and concerns about this time of
  change.
Family Involvement

• Families are invited and encouraged to take
the opportunity to engage in conversation
with their children during the growth and
development unit. This is an ideal time to
share family values and expectations related
to their child’s physical and emotional
  maturation.
