How to add RSS feeds into MySite What is an RSS feed? In the typical scenario of using web feeds, a content provider publishes a feed link on their site which end users can register with an aggregator program (also called a feed reader or a news reader) running on their own machines; doing this is usually as simple as dragging the link from the web browser to the aggregator. When instructed, the aggregator asks all the servers in its feed list if they have new content; if so, the aggregator either makes a note of the new content or downloads it. The kinds of content delivered by a web feed are typically HTML (webpage content) or links to web pages and other kinds of digital media. Often when websites provide web feeds to notify users of content updates, they only include summaries in the web feed rather than the full content itself. Where can I get an RSS feed? Typically, your favorite websites have an RSS Feed link. The easiest way to find out is by using a browser such as Google. For example, if you wanted to find out if CNN had a RSS Feed you could do a search using the parameters “CNN RSS feed?” In which case you would be shown a link to: http://www.cnn.com/services/rss/ How do I add an RSS Feed to MySite? Once logged in your MySite page click on Site Actions on the upper right side of the homepage. Then Click on Edit Page. Now you are in Edit Mode. To add an RSS Feed Click on Add a Web Part. A new window will open with the option to add new content. Check the box for RSS Viewer and click add. You have now added an RSS Viewer to your page. Now you need to add to add a URL in order to show content. Click on “Open the tool pane”. Add the URL of your content provider in the RSS Feed URL Box in the side pane of your site such as http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_world.rss “Feed Limit” in the pane lets you set how many headlines you see. Once you have set the properties such as Feed limit, click on Apply. You are still in Edit Mode but will be shown the new RSS Feed on your page. You have the ability in Edit Mode to drag the Feed Pane to wherever you want within your page. Once complete, click OK.
