ROAD RALLY AND HUTTERITE COLONY TOUR

On May 23, members of the club participated in an organized road rally which took us
from Lethbridge to Pincher Creek following a route map and a detailed questionnaire. It
was a very pretty drive especially when we turned south at hwy 810 from Fort MacLeod
and then when we turned west on hwy 507 to Pincher Creek. In Pincher Creek, the
members regrouped and proceeded to the Pincher Creek Hutterite Colony for lunch and
a tour of the colony. After a delicious lunch, dessert and singing by the Hutterite ladies,
we were shown all areas of the colony: dairy farm, auto shop, carpentry shop, egg-laying
barn, chickens, church, laundry and school. Our guide was willing to answer all our
questions. It was a very educational and interesting tour which gave us an insight into
the Hutterite culture. A thank you to Mike Williams for organizing our day; it was
appreciated.

                      LETHBRIDGE HISTORICAL FACTS

THE BEAUTY OF SUGAR BEETS

Sugar beets are an ugly vegetable with a sweet heart. They were first planted in
southern Alberta in 1903 to supply the newly-built Knight Sugar Company factory in
Raymond. Farmers were not familiar with sugar beets and, with irrigation not yet well
established, the crops were dismal. The factory closed after 12 years.

Today, sugar beets are an important crop. All beets are grown under contract to Rogers
Sugar Limited and processed at the factory in Taber. Harvesting of the one-to-two
kilogram root starts in early September. At the processing plant, the beets are washed,
cut into noodle-like sections and juiced. The juice is purified then poured into an
evaporator system to remove water, and finally the sugar crystallizes.

The plant also produces liquid sugar and beet pulp. Liquid sugar is shipped in tankers to
industrial customers; beet pulp is primarily used in livestock feeds.

THE GOLDEN OIL – CANOLA

Fields of bright yellow canola anchor an industry that sends oil around the world. Canbra
Foods is a leading producer and exporter of food-grade canola oil, high protein animal
feed pellets and environmentally friendly lubricants.

The company, originally called Western Canadian Seed Processors, got its start in 1957
squeezing oil out of sunflower seeds. It soon switched to rapeseed, producing a marine
lubricant, an edible oil and animal feed. When agricultural scientists developed a new
healthier strain of rapeseed, a new name was in order. Representatives from the
oilseed-crushing industry met in Calgary in 1978 and named the new variety Canola for
Canadian Oil. Canbra Foods ships its Lethbridge products to thirteen countries.

                     LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE

Our family took a ski trip, and I was knocked unconscious by the chairlift. I called my
insurance company from the hospital but it refused cover my injury. “Why not?” I
complained. “You get hit in the head by a chairlift,” the insurance rep. said, “that makes
you a moron, and we consider that a pre-existing condition.”

A little girl was asked what she wanted most for her birthday and she declared: “a baby
brother.” “Daddy and I would like to give you a baby brother,” said her mom, “but there
isn’t time before your birthday.” “Why don’t you do like they do down at daddy’s factory
when they want something in a hurry? Put more men on the job.”

Everybody wants to save the earth; but nobody wants to help mom with the dishes.
(Kathy Griffin)

The other night, I ate at a real nice family restaurant. Every table had an argument going.

“take two and keep away from children.” (Roseanne Barr)
