  Problems/Challenge

• DiSC is a personal assessment tool used to
  improve work productivity, teamwork and
  communication. DiSC is non-judgmental and
  helps people discuss their behavioral
differences. If you participate in a DiSC
program, you'll be asked to complete a series
of questions that produce a detailed report
about your personality and behavior your
answers make you and how you see your
  world.

                  Definitions:
• “An individual’s
  personality, then, is his
  unique pattern of traits.”

  – A trait is “any
    distinguishable, relatively
    enduring way in which
    one individual differs from
    others.”

P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
What is ‘Personality ?
The dynamic organization within the individual of
those psychometric system that determine his /
her unique adjustments to the environment.

                   Safety Personality
individual personality was the result of heredity or of environment

   Situation –
‘Situation’ influences ‘Personality’ , apart from ‘Heredity’ and
‘Environment’. Therefore, reaction of the same individual changes in
   different situations.
              Safety Personality
• Environment –
As far Personality is concerned, we can see that
three main factors constitute ‘Environment’. They
   are –
1. Culture – is the pattern or life-style in which are
   developed.
2. Early Conditioning – The preferences our parents
decided about the child in early stage.
3. Experience – Right from the beginning, child starts
gaining different ‘Experiences’ , knowingly or
   unknowingly. Such experience becomes ‘Mental
   environment’.
              The Magic Three
• DISC profile provides a foundation
  for people to first understand
  themselves, second understand
  others and third adapt their
  communication style to increase
  safety communication
  effectiveness

     William Marston’s created 4
   quadrants: Dominance, Influence,
      Steadiness and Compliance
• DISC addresses “How” we behave rather than
why we behave a certain way, what people
actually see from us. These are our actions or
reactions in relation to our environment and
they are observable to other people

     How it impacts worker safety
How thinking, feeling, and acting on instinct impact
                   performance

                                                    Thinking: Poor skills,
         Lack of knowledge, or judgment
         competency
                                                     Affect: different
         Personal approaches or
         Conflicts incompatible desires

                                                      Instincts: False efforts
         Misdirected caused by working against
         efforts a natural grain

Lower or Higher the Formula is People
• Lower or higher results in
  each of the areas does
  not indicate better or
  worse results. We are a
mix of all styles and the
  levels just showcase the
  intensity of the style. If
you have a very high “D”
  behavior style, then
  other people will see that
  as your predominant
  behavior tendency.

I am, you are, we are a culture
• AM I ONLY 1 OF THE 4 FACTORS?
Emphatically, no! It is very important that people
are not simply seen as purely 1 factor. It is the
intensity of all 4 factors as measured by the DISC
assessment that makes each of us unique
(including both high scoring and low scoring). It is
necessary in the beginning to distinguish only 4
factors, however this is only the first step in the
process of learning about DISC. People should
not be categorised as simply one or the other.
