GOD’S IPOD: The Greatest Download of all Time
INTRODUCTION: Perhaps the most profound sentence in the entire bible is contained in these
words…The Lord is my shepherd The sentence is made up of five words – each word tells a part of the
magnificent description of our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
But before we look at this first sentence, let’s hear the context of the entire Psalm. Let’s read it
together. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he
leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul :He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for
his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for
thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence
of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.-Ps.23
TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
1. WHO is this Shepherd? It is the Lord. Not just a Lord or a God – the premise of the greatest
download of all time starts with the importance and exclusivity of this first word: The. You won’t find the
blessing and the magnificence of this song in your life unless you start with the one and only Shepherd.
The Lord is the Hebrew reference to God. The original download would have used the name of
God: Yahweh. The ancient songwriter, however, believed that the actual name of God – Yahweh – was too
holy to be written…so throughout the Old Testament, the writers substituted the name Yahweh with The
Lord.
If Lord Jesus Christ is your shepherd, the good news is that all the attributes of God are on your
side. The Attributes of the Lord:
a) Omni-SCIENCE (Psalm 139:13-18). If the Lord is your Shepherd, He knows all about you, your
individual condition and circumstance, your individual weaknesses and needs. He has complete and
intimate knowledge of who you are and what you need. His knowledge is perfect.
b) Omni-PRESENCE (Matthew 28:20). He is everywhere at once. He is never separated from you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. -Matthew 28:20
He is with you each and every moment – he is with you this moment and so we can look at the
future with absolute confidence; being omnipresent, he will be with you every moment of your future
until finally we are with him in eternity.
c) Omni-POTENCE (Isaiah 40:25-29).
What his love wants is the best for us, and what His wisdom knows to be that best for us, His
power can procure and produce for us. The only thing that can hinder that powerful will from working in
our lives is our sin (Isaiah 59:1-2) or our unbelief (Mark 6:5-6). There is no limit to what his almightiness
can do for us if He so will.
He is the almighty creator of the universe. I am told in Northern Canada – hundreds of miles away
from any large city – there was no light pollution. On a cloudless night the heavens come alive…with the
dancing aurora borealis and the incredible vividness and depth of the starry sky.
Other who study the night skies know how to examine the pattern of stars and identify such things
as … [PICTURE OF ORION’S BELT] or others amazing patterns like the Big and Little Dipper
[PICTURE OF BIG AND LITTLE DIPPER]. Understand when you look up to the sky you see at least
250,000,000 x 250,000,000 different stars. Almost every one of those stars you see is larger than our own
sun [PICTURE OF SUN SIZES]. Consider the vast energy in those stars. Lift your eyes and look to the
heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by

                                                     1
name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. -Isaiah 40:26 Now
remember, the God of the universe who provided the energy to fuel these vast stars, the promise is this:
He will not grow tired… He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Is. 40:28-29
If you were able to transport our strongest telescope to the nearest star, [PICTURE OF ALPHA
CENTAURI] Alpha Centauri, get it all set up and then look back this way, the earth could not be seen,
even with the aid of that powerful instrument. It makes us feel extraordinarily small when we consider
the heavens. I tell you this so that we realize that just as the universe is incomprehensibly huge – so also
is it incomprehensibly small. In fact the average size between the smallest bit of matter and the largest
heavenly body is actually the size of a human being and the creator of this infinitely, energetic and
complex creation is “the Lord” that wants you to know that he is your shepherd.
What security grips our hearts as we think of this next divine quality…?
d) His Omni-EXISTENCE (Hebrews 13:8). He abides forever. He is the great “I AM”. This great
song does not say: The Lord WAS David’s shepherd. No, God’s I-pod says: e Lord IS my shepherd. And
the Scripture tells us: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Heb. 13:8
Just as he was with Abraham, and worked in and through Moses and gave insights to Daniel – he
is with you, unchanged, today! All this information that The Lord is Yahweh, the God who is omniscient,
omnipresent, omnipotent and Omni existent, brings me to the second question that we must ask if we are
to grasp the wonder of the 5 word phrase: The Lord is my shepherd.

2. WHAT is your relationship with the Lord? The answer to the question is found not in the first 3
words as was the answer to the last question, but in the last 2 words: The Lord is MY SHEPHERD
Yes, the Scripture tells us he is “the good shepherd” (John 10:14); and Hebrews 13:20 says he is
“that great shepherd”; and 1 Peter 5:4 says he is “the chief shepherd”; but the greatest description of all is
“the Lord is MY shepherd”!
The creator God of the universe, maker of great and small, the ultimate source of energy would be
your shepherd – the one who watches over your life and meets your every need. He is mine. I remember
the night when I definitely asked him to forgive my sin and enter my life. You can make that same
decision and experience his care for your life.
THEN, and only then, the 5 words of this sentence become a celebration, an exclamation, a
marvelous truth – the greatest download of all time from God’s own I-pod:
                                   THE – LORD – IS – MY – SHEPHERD!
