Topic:             Occupations of the people in my town

Content            1.1 By the end of the 6-year primary schooling, pupils will be ableto demonstrate
Standard:          understanding of variety of linear and non-linear in the form of print and non print material
                   using a range of strategies to construct meaning.

                   3.2 By the end of the 6-year primary schooling, pupils will be able to write using
                   appropriate language form and styles for a range of purposes.

                   3.2.1 Able to transfer information with guidance to complete
                   a) linear texts

Objectives:
                   By the end of the lesson, children should be able to:
                   a) List the occupations of people in their town/neighbourhood/housing that they know
                   b) read about the activity that fishermen do on page 3.
                   c) Answer the questions on page 3 in groups of three
                   d) Make a poster about an occupation and include details such as job routine, place of
                   work and working time.
Time:              60 minutes

1. Teacher shows students the flashcards below and sticks
them to the whiteboard. Teacher asks the students to
check with their partner to see if they can remember what
the jobs are in English. In groups, students think of as
many jobs as they can in 2 mins. Teacher writes the jobs
on the board. Teacher asks students to look at the list.
Which jobs can be found in their community? Which jobs
can be done from home? (At this point introduce the
concept of a cottage industry - a job that can be done from
home e.g. sewing clothes)

2. Before reading, teacher asks students what they knowabout what fishermen do.
Ask students to read p.3 to see if any of their ideas were mentioned in thepassage.

3. In groups of three, the students answer the questions onpage 3 based on the
passage. Teacher discusses the answers with the students.

4. Teacher discusses the passage with the students.Teacher and students talk about
the responsibilities/tasksof some of the occupations from Activity 1.
5. In the same groups of three, the students choose anoccupation and create a poster
which includes the information below:
a) job routine of the occupation
b) place of work
c) working time.

6. Teacher provides old newspapers/magazines for the students to find the picture of
the occupation they write about and paste it on their poster or students can draw a
picture.

* For this activity, teacher asks the students to bring realia from home related to the
places (stationery shop, hardware store, night market, coffee shop and supermarket).
7. If there is extra time, the students can present theirposter in front of the class.

Play a game of Who am I?
To play the game, the children play in pairs or small
groups. One of the children chooses an occupation from
the board, but doesn’t say which one she has chosen. The other children asks
questions until they guess the correctjob. To make it more challenging, only allow a
certain number of guesses.
