					Overview of Meiosis

      Notes #4
What are Homologous
Chromosomes?
ANS: Pair of Chromosomes that have
the same genetic info, size, and shape.

Ex.
Homologous
Chromosomes

                             Homologous
                             Chromosomes
Diploid Cells vs Haploid Cells
 What are diploid cells?

ANS: Cells that have 2 sets of
 chromosomes; 1 from dad & 1 from
 mom.
Symbol representing Diploid
cells: 2N
Ex. Mom’s set

                      Dad’s set

 Mom’s Set (1N) + Dad’s Set (1N) = 2N
What are haploid cells?
ANS: Cells that have only 1 set of
 chromosomes
 Symbol representing Haploid
 Cells: 1N
   Ex.

One set
 (1N)
What is Meiosis?
ANS: A process where half the # of
 chromosomes is produced to make
 gamete cells (aka. sex cells)

                          sex
Meiosis only occurs in _______ cells
 only.
Overview of Meiosis
(Consist of 2 stages)

A. Meiosis I (Separation of Homologous
   Chromosomes.)
B. Meiosis II (Separation of sister
   chromatids.)
  Preview of Meiosis
  (Formation of Gametes)
Interphase Meiosis I Meiosis II
Summary of Interphase Summary of Meiosis I
  DNA condenses & Homologous
 forms chromosomes chromosomes separate

             Summary of Meiosis II
               Sister chromatids
                   separate
