LARRY RILEY CALLED AS SENIOR PASTOR
First Baptist Church of Clarksville has called Larry Riley as Senior Pastor in our business
session Sunday, September 30, after a combined morning service. Approximately 1,500
members participated in the vote.
Pastor Riley will become the 21st Pastor of our 181-year-old church when he assumes the role
on October 16.
He comes to Clarksville from Sarasota Baptist Church in Sarasota, Florida, where he has served
as executive pastor and campus pastor at the church’s Lakewood Ranch Campus, a growing
satellite congregation from the main church.
Pastor Riley is not a stranger to First Baptist Church having served here twice previously. He
was Senior Associate Pastor from 1998 to 2002. He had served as Minister of Education from
1994 to 1997.
Pastor Riley was recommended as Pastor by our 15-member search committee following a year
-long search. The committee reviewed approximately 400 resumes and identified a short list of
candidates before singling him out to recommend to the Deacon body and the congregation
The committee was drawn to Pastor Riley because of his proven leadership, strong preaching,
education experience and administrative skill, Doug Weiland, committee chair told the
“For such a time as this, God has risen up, prepared, and led Larry Riley to provide the vision
and leadership for the great days that are ahead of us,” Doug said in making the
recommendation to the congregation.
Doug reported that committee members representing the congregation and selected from
among the congregation were unanimous in their decision to recommend Pastor Riley.
“God has prepared Larry Riley to lead this church to be on mission in this community and
around the world,” Doug said.
In meetings with Deacons, Sunday School leaders and church members during the weekend
prior to the vote, Pastor Riley said that he was attracted to the church because of what he
identified as “the tremendous potential in the church and this community.”
Pastor Riley said the facilities of the church are a significant asset that the church can use to
communicate the gospel and draw people.
During his tenure as senior associate pastor, Pastor Riley oversaw construction of the 1,850-
seat worship building and preschool area.
“As much as 80 to 85 percent of this community is not attending church anywhere,” Pastor
Riley told deacons in a Friday evening meeting. “We have a tremendous opportunity to
connect with them and show them the love of Jesus Christ.”
Pastor Riley said he would lead the church to focus on college students and military as well as
others as he pointed out the relatively young demographic of Clarksville.
“There is much work to be done as we build bridges to reach out to the community,” Pastor
