Camps: The Ultimate Solution
 to Sustainable Weight Loss?
The CDC has labeled obesity as an
 “epidemic,” threatening the health and
wellness of adults and children in the
 United States. Each year, approximately
300,000 deaths are attributed to obesity
related conditions, making it the most
common preventable cause of death in
 America.
As we welcome the New Year and people
 begin making resolutions to become
 healthier through weight loss, numerous
methods come to mind and many
consider signing up for weight loss
 camps.
But are these camps effective, and does
participating in such a program lead to
 long-term, sustainable weight loss?
Weight Loss Camps 101
Weight loss camps are programs in which
a person is enrolled for a period of time
with the goal of losing weight through
 exercise, diet, and various lifestyle
changes. Some of these camps are
hosted at resorts, and others are offered
closer to home through local fitness
 facilities or hospitals.
Participants are given a strict diet and
exercise program, and their progress is
monitored throughout with the goal of
 both increasing health and improving
 self-confidence levels.
The science behind weight loss camps is
that through guidance a person will be
able to make appropriate food choices,
learn the basics of an exercise program,
and begin to build self-confidence that
they can carry with them after the
 program has ended.
All of these things are proven to assist in
weight loss and lifestyle changes, and the
support received at the camps from
 trainers, counselors, and nutritionists
makes many of these camps a successful
way to lose weight. But what happens
when a person leaves the camp and is
forced to make dietary decisions on their
own? What happens when the coach that
has guided them through daily workout
regimens is gone, and they’re left to
 perform the exercises alone?
Some can maintain the techniques they
learned at the camp, and use the coping
techniques during their daily lives to
continue on their weight loss journey.
Others find they fall easily off the wagon
and revert back to old ways, gaining
back the weight and losing confidence in
 the process.
For this reason, it’s essential that those
involved in weight loss camps learn
effective techniques to handle stress and
get themselves back on track, and
develop a strong system of support to
aid them with life choices outside of the
 program.
Knowing Yourself and What Works
 for You
Weight loss camps can be effective in
numerous ways: they can teach a person
the techniques needed to face stress and
mental weight loss battles in addition to
helping them learn about nutrition and
exercise, or they can help a person jump
start their weight loss and give them the
tools to continue the journey after the
 camp ends.
Weight loss camps are effective at jump
starting the journey to better health. But,
 long term wellness requires commitment
both mentally and physically, and you
should aim to develop a support system
in and outside the program to keep you
 motivated on your journey.
Talk to family members, other camp
 participants, and counselors frequently
during your journey. Soon enough, that
goal that once seemed so unattainable
will be in the palm of your hand.
