                                Raccoons, the Masked Bandits
                                        By Cindy Grigg
1 Raccoons are sometimes called "masked bandits." They are known for their
black face masks. That, along with their night raids on garbage cans and gardens, make
people think of masked robbers.
2 A female raccoon may give birth to one to seven babies. The mother takes care
of her kits (or cubs) by herself. The kits cannot see or hear until they are about three
weeks old. At birth, though, the black mask can already be seen. Raccoons are
mammals. The mother feeds her babies milk from her body. At about four months, the
babies are ready to hunt with their mother. The kits often stay close to their mother for
their first year. After that, most raccoons live alone.
3 Raccoons are omnivores. They eat almost anything! Raccoons eat nuts, fruit,
and plants. They eat frogs, crayfish, earthworms, and insects. They eat bird and turtle
eggs. They will even eat fish and small rodents. If there's water nearby, raccoons often
seem to wash their food. You can often see their footprints in mud along a body of
water.
4 Raccoons have thick, bushy tails. The tail has black rings around it. Their front
paws almost look like hands. Raccoons have five "fingers" with claws on all four paws.
They do not have a thumb. They have short legs and seem to waddle as they walk. The
bottoms of their feet don't have hair. Instead, the paws are covered with smooth black
skin. Raccoons use their front paws almost as well as humans use their hands.
5 The North American raccoon is also called the “common raccoon”. They live
almost everywhere in North America. They are found from Canada to Panama. These
furry mammals live in almost every kind of habitat. They can be found in deserts. They
can be found along the seashore. They can be found in grasslands and forests. Many of
them are even found in cities. In colder areas, they will sleep most of the winter in a
den. They live off stored body fat.
6 Some people think raccoons are pests. Raccoons will raid gardens and eat the
fruits and vegetables, even if they aren't quite ripe. Their favorite garden food is corn!
They will eat pet food, too. Raccoons have good memories. Once they find pet food or
garbage cans with food, they keep coming back for more.
7 Many people enjoy watching raccoons and taking pictures of them. These
masked bandits are enjoyable to watch!
