The adrenal glands are the stress glands of the body. When the environment is hostile to the body the reaction is to fight or run (aka fight or flight response – as you would running from a tiger). Both of these reactions cause the secretion of adrenal gland hormones. These glands are designed for temporary use – therefore their function is designed for spurts can become exhausted if relied upon all day to function. The hormones secreted by the adrenals are cortisol, DHEA, and norepinephrine to name a few. The functions of these hormones are below…   They take blood from the heart and route it to the rest of your body to prepare for fight or flight. Through this secretion, digestion is signaled to shut down (your body isn’t too concerned with digestion when it’s running from a tiger). The direct results of long term stress are listed below.  Weight Gain  Constipation  Increased PMS symptoms  Bouts of Diarrhea  Cramps  More than 50% of protein, B vitamins and vitamin C are not absorbed when under stress.  Depleted Magnesium levels – needed for vascular health and relaxation.  Chronically Increased blood pressure.  Lack of sleep – Tough waking up first thing in the morning  Irritability  Sugar handling problems – diabetic tendencies  Salt Cravings – light amounts of salt at particular times per day are actually used to artificially raise your blood pressure so that your adrenal glands don’t have to – hence the biological craving you may have (probably later in the afternoon when your blood sugar levels have dropped after lunch).

 Sugar Cravings – as mentioned above, you’ll want sugar when the adrenals are unable to sufficiently raise your blood sugar. This is where pasta cravings come in and over eating. When this is in a chronic state, you’re predisposing yourself to type II diabetes.

HOW DO KNOW YOU HAVE ADRENAL FATIGUE FOR SURE? If you can relate to the symptoms listed above, then you’re likely over stressed. There are two conceptual cures. 1. ELIMINATE THE STRESS: this likely isn’t going to happen all-together (since stress is our jobs, soccer games, raising kids , life in general), but any reduction you can make will help 2. INCREASE YOUR ABILITY TO HANDLE STRESS: this is an art-form all in-itself! There are many ways to do so. Consult your doctor to get the specifics on your particular case, because if your cortisol levels are high then the treatment is different from if your DHEA levels are altered. The best way to know for sure is to consult your doctor. Endocrinologists can help you with this, but some important questions to ask are  If the doctor is approaching you with a whole body approach. It’s not realistic or health to treat ONLY the adrenal glands and forget the rest of your body.  If he’s addressing a lifestyle change in any way. You likely weren’t deficient as a kid, therefore its not always likely you have a disease that requires long term injections or prescriptions. The main question to ask in this case is WHY NOW? How come I didn’t have these symptoms 2, 5, 10, or 20 years ago? Many tests can be used. Raglan’s tests, paradoxical papillary reaction, heart rate variability, but really Overall, one of the best tests is a salivary test, because there is a number linked to the condition. What gets measured gets done and taking blood can actually measure the blood sugar too, BUT you’ll need several measurements throughout the day. Blood sugar is supposed to fluctuate and coordinate with your day. Your base blood sugar level is SUPPOSED to be different in morning and evening and night. Supplements are likely a long term solution in almost any case. B vitamins are a necessity, Magnesium, light amounts of salt, exercise, plant extracts and a few others such as Siberian ginseng.
