T pa B M am ay agic Cub l "The World's Greatest Magic C lub!" Volume 5 Issue 11 November 2005 SAM Assembly 82 & IBM Ring 42 http://www.tampabaymagicclub.com A Word From The President Boy has October been a busy month! TBMC had 2 great lectures. First was David Ginn, well-known children’s magician, author, and inventor. His lecture at the Quality Inn was outstanding! David has performed for over 30 years and knows his business. The lecture was very insightful and entertaining; he’s a naturally funny guy and a real gentleman. Our second lecture, at our monthly meeting, was Jim Pace. Jim performs strolling magic at restaurants, but now mostly corporate events. Jim also has been plying his trade for 30 years. Jim amazed the audience with his coin slight of hand (this guy has some serious chops!!). But even more impressive, at least to me, was the thinking he employs toward his magic. Jim is also a great inventor of magic effects and offered some great bargains at the meeting. He gave away a $25 book to all who attended! I bought his Hot Leads, business card on fire effect (which I used twice the next night at Old Chicago), and his Sampler DVD, which included 13 effects performed and explained. What a bargain! It includes his Pro Nightmare routine that he showed during the lecture that I loved. A great twist on a real classic effect. November promises to be a great month as well. Our meeting on November 8th will be our annual Magic Mini Mall. Wild Magic from San Antonio, The Magic Shop from Tampa, and BestBuyMagic from the Internet, will all be there to demo effects and offer some real deals to the membership. Meeting will be at the Cinema Café. This month, we are going to offer an all-you-can-eat buffet at the meeting; pizza, chicken wings, and salad, all for $10, so come hungry. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; short business meeting at 7:30 p.m.; and the Magic Mini-Mall at 7:50 p.m. There will NOT be a Close-up Class this month. But starting in December, Trung Quang Bui (“TQ” to everyone) will be taking over as the permanent instructor. TQ has filled in for Windy in the past and done a terrific job. Thanks TQ for taking over this position. And I would be remise if I didn’t thank Windy Douton for doing a wonderful job as close-up instructor for the past several years. A big THANK YOU, WINDY! Windy will be working with new members to help bring them on board in the future. Our other activity in November is our annual Magic Show fundraiser. This is on November 12th, at St. Dunstan’s All Saints Hall. Tickets are only $8 to members. Every member should be buying 2 tickets to support the club; this is our only fundraiser of the year, so come on folks, let’s help out!! Also in November is the Great American Teach-in on November 16. I have a very needy school that is looking for a magician to perform, so if you haven’t already signed up, and want to participate, contact me ASAP. December will be a great month as well. We have Joshua Jay lecturing at our club meeting on December 13th. Joshua is a multi-award winning close-up magician from Ohio. He has lectured all across the US and recently had a three DVD set released by L&L publishing. This will be a great lecture; don’t miss it. Details for the Annual Banquet Dinner-Show have been set. The Banquet will be at the Clearwater Country Club on January 14th, which is a Saturday! A recent survey showed that the membership wanted the banquet on Saturday, so there you are! Greg Gaulden will be performing, so it will be a great evening. More details to come. Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend the magic show presented by TBMC member Brandon Ford. Brandon did a great job before an enthusiastic crowd. He had a nice variety of routines and his interaction with the audience was very entertaining. Brandon is becoming quite a performer. One of Brandon’s assistants on stage was fellow member Tyler Jacobs; good job Tyler! In the audience were several TBMC members, thanks to those in attendance for supporting a fellow TBMC member. Elections to the Board of Directors are right around the corner. I’m the chairman of the nomination committee, so anyone interested in helping out on the board of directors please, please contact me. We have several openings and no experience is required. This time of year is traditionally the busiest for magicians, so get out there and be magical!! Your Prez. Paul 1 THE TBMC CRYSTAL BALL Our TBMC Meeting on Tuesday evening, November 8, at the Cinema Café (US-19N and Sunset Point Road in Clearwater) will start with a short business meeting at 7:30 p.m. This will be followed by our TBMC-unique “Magic Mini-Mall,” one of the highlights of the year. Three top dealers will by demonstrating and selling a huge variety of quality magic at special prices. Since the meeting is FREE to all members and guests, bring along your favorite “Secret Santas” so that they can buy you a great supply of new tricks for the upcoming holidays! AND COME HUNGRY – your Board of Directors arranged for a great $10 “all-you-can-eat” buffet for the entire meeting (sorry, no doggy bags or mooching off each other!). NOTE: No Close-up Class. Tickets for our annual Magic Show Fundraiser will be on sale for only $8 (member purchases) and $10 (non-member purchases). The show, set for Saturday, November 12, is going to be GREAT!! You should feel obligated to put some great fun into your life and treat the whole family to an evening of magic and fun! See the flyer at the end of this newsletter for more details. December 13 meeting will continue the festive spirit with a lecture by Joshua Jay, featuring close-up and stand-up magic, and even mentalism! January 14, 2006 (Saturday) – Annual Banquet Dinner-Show with entertainment by Greg Gaulden, at the Clearwater Country Club; $25/ticket. ___________________________________________ CONGRATULATIONS TO PATRICK GAUGHAN … On his Live and Silent Art Show, presenting a collection of oils, watercolors and sculptures available for acquisition. The event, held at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, brought in over $14,000 for the General Robert H. Gaughan Foundation, benefiting the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. TBMC member Mark Byrne served as videographer for Patrick, and got great footage of this very charitable event. HURRICANE WILMA STRIKES HARD John & Tammy Calvert are OK. They rode out very high winds over 100 mph on their yacht in Merritt Island. John had the engines running against the winds and he lost all but two anchors. He does not need any help at this time. Some people are coming over to help put out new lines and fix things up. Tammy was really worried but is OK now. How John can do the things he does at his age is awesome. He is an inspiration to all of us who are getting on in years. His courage and stamina are inspiring. ******* NEWS FROM MARIA IBANEZ – 1stVP, S.A.M. We are truly humbled by your concern, phone calls and good wishes through this storm. We feel truly blessed at having been spared the worst of the Wilma wrath although we did take a beating, BUT, we all came through physically unscathed and that speaks volumes for our good fortune. We lost 16 large Japanese Palms many of which landed right alongside our house stacked one atop the other as in domino chips. A couple of the palms crashed down on the aviary, fortunately my birds were not in there and I only lost 1 of my lovebirds. I would like to thank all of you who have called and e-mailed your words of support and your prayers and good wishes. Times like this show us who our friends are and you can't imagine what a comfort it is to hear a friendly voice on the other end of the phone and to feel some sense of normalcy in the rest of the world. 2 TAMPA NEWS The Warren Hamilton IBM Ring 175, in Tampa, is having their Holiday Dinner Show on Saturday evening, December 3, 2005, at the YMCA, 110 E.
