A boating vacation is never boring. There will
always be something to do, for instance, steering
the houseboat or maneuvering through the locks;
both of these activities demand the utmost attention
of the captain and his or her crew. Whilst sailing
along, the unspoiled river landscape subtly merges
with the charming canals. You will happen on
villages and cities in an even tempo. The variety of
animals and plants en route is also fascinating –
do not forget to pack your binoculars!

The Fascinating World of Waterways in Burgundy
In the north, the Saône is connected to the Elsass via the Canal des
Vosges. Further down, the Canal de la Bourgogne à la Champagne
provides a connection to Lorraine and Champagne. The Canal du
Rhône au Rhin leads to St. Jean-de-Losne, the Canal de Bourgogne
branches off in the rivers Yonne and Seine; both Paris and the
Atlantic Ocean can be reached via these rivers.
The Canal du Centre was inaugurated over 200 years ago; it connects
the river Saône with the Loire, the longest and historically most
fascinating river in France. Starting in the town of Digoin, you can
navigate the Loire-Chanel, either southwards to Roanne or west-
wards to Briare. This canal is the only one, which gives you the
opportunity to access the world-famous wineyards of Burgundy
(Rully, Meursault, Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Pommard . . .)

In Burgundy there are nearly 1200 km (746 miles) of rivers and canals
almost deserted by commercial traffic but available for pleasure
boating. This remarkable richness of navigable waterways is explained
by the geographical situation of Burgundy. It is in fact in the heart of
this region that one finds the watershed between the valleys of the
three principal French rivers, the Seine, the Loire and the Rhône.
During the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries a vast network of canals was
built throughout Burgundy in order to link these three rivers which Chagny
