McAllen’s 27th Annual Christmas
Candlelight Posada Parade
Archer Park, Downtown McAllen
Friday, December 4th - 7 p.m.
1. DEADLINE for entering the Parade: Friday, November 20, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. Entries must be registered to
participate in the parade. Groups that have not submitted an entry form will be denied entry at the parade
start. Please provide a detailed description of all entries in the space provided on the entry form. This
information will be used for publicity and by emcees to describe your entry at the review stand and on
McAllen Cable Network's coverage of the parade. Entries received after the deadline will be considered on a
space-available basis. At the discretion of the Candlelight Posada Committee, late entries may or may not
be eligible for competition. Groups not submitting a complete entry form will be disqualified from judging.
2. TIME: Parade will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. and will finish at approximately 8:00 p.m. In the event of any
weather situation that results in cancellation of the parade on Friday, please note the parade will not be re-
scheduled.
3. LINE-UP: All entries are requested to be at the STAGING AREA no later than 6:15 p.m. Parade Numbers
will be assigned upon entering the Parking Lot. Monitors will be on hand to direct all entries to their assigned
locations. Vehicles must remain in assigned location until start of parade. Only vehicles participating in
the actual parade will be allowed in the line-up & staging areas.
4. THEME: All entries must fit with this year's theme or be Holiday/Christmas-related.
5. LIGHTED PARADE: All entries must be lighted including all automobiles and marching groups.
6. SANTA CLAUS: No Santa Claus may be part of any entry other than the official Santa Claus Parade float.
Entries that break this rule are subject to removal from the parade and will no longer be eligible for the
parade competition.
7. POLITICAL ENTRIES: No political entries - floats, cars, or any other style of entries will be accepted.
8. COMMERCIAL: Commercial entries will be accepted ONLY if the entry conforms to and is decorated in
accordance with the theme of the parade. NO OTHER COMMERCIAL ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
9. HANDOUTS: I-M-P-O-R-T-A-N-T. ABSOLUTELY, NO candy, souvenirs, paper, etc., can be HANDED
OUT, THROWN FROM or DISTRIBUTED in any manner from any float, vehicle, or entry in the Parade.
10. DIS-ASSEMBLE: Parade ends at Cedar and Main Streets but will disperse at Ebony or Fir Streets.
11. A uniformed distance of two car lengths between entries must be maintained.
12. Only two (2) stopped performances of no more than 30 seconds each will be allowed. These
performances may only be in front of La Placita (the old Federal Building) and in front of the Review Stand at
Archer Park. There will be no limit on the number of performances you do while moving at regular parade
speed.
13. Groups wishing to enter the parade will be limited to three individual (3) units per group.
14. Hot-Rods and racecars will not be allowed to REV their engines during the parade.
15. Automobiles are not acceptable as a float entry. Antique automobiles may be considered at the discretion of
the committee.
16. Floats/entries with potential fire hazards must provide suitable fire extinguishing equipment.
17. For safety purposes, participants must ride on the inside of the float. No one is to sit on the edge of the float
trailers with their feet dangling over the side.
18. Other than certified Law Enforcement Officers, no one may possess live ammunition while in the parade.
19. Parade Officials will inspect all entries before the parade begins. Entries not complying with the rules or
judged not in good taste will be removed from the line-up. We will have two Parade Marshals along Main
Street working the parade. They will keep the parade moving at an enjoyable speed for all to enjoy.

JUDGING
All parade entries will be eligible to compete for trophies and prize money in the 2009 Candlelight Posada Parade.
There will be one overall parade winner, and winners in each of eight individual categories. Entries must select one
on the eight individual categories to compete in. All entries will be eligible for the Grand Prize which will be awarded
to the highest point-getter. No entry may win more than one cash award. Entries must complete the parade route to
be eligible to receive an award.
On the parade entry form, groups must select if they would like to be judged and eligible for prizes. Judges will be
stationed along the parade route and rate competing entries as they pass in review.
The judging criteria are as follows:
Scale (1 - 10 with 10 being highest)
1. Appearance and Originality - Entries will be judged on the overall appearance of the entry.
2. Theme - Entries will be judged on adherence to the 2009 theme or Holiday-related theme and the overall
effectiveness of the theme.
3. Workmanship - Entries will be judged on design, effort, and organization and planning.
4. Participation - This includes audience response to the entry, interaction with the audience and enthusiasm
from members of the entry.
In the event of a tie, judges will decide tie-breaker. All decisions are final. Winners will be announced on the main
stage following the parade. Prize money will be available to pick up at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce in the
week following the Candlelight Posada. A list of categories follows on the next page.

Candlelight Posada Parade Awards
Parade entries are eligible to compete in only one category. The only exception is the Overall Trophy. All competing
entries will be considered for this prize.
Overall Trophy
Cash Prize: $1,000
This trophy is awarded to the entry judged to be the best overall entry in the Candlelight Posada Parade. All entries
electing to compete for a prize are eligible for this award.
The Procession Trophy
Cash Prizes: First Place - $200; Second Place - $150; Third Place - $50
This trophy is awarded to the best marching or walking unit.
Little Drummer Boy Trophy
Cash Prizes: First Place - $200; Second Place - $150; Third Place - $50
This trophy is awarded to the best marching band. Only school marching bands are eligible for this award. Other
music-themed entries may compete in the Angel Trophy category. There are categories for both Junior High and
High School & Above bands.
The Feliz Navidad Trophy
Cash Prizes: First Place - $200; Second Place - $150; Third Place - $50
This trophy is awarded to the best cultural-themed entry.
The Nativity Award Trophy
Cash Prizes: First Place - $200; Second Place - $150; Third Place - $50
This trophy is awarded to the best religious-themed or church group entry.
The Mayor's Tree Trophy
Cash Prizes: First Place - $200; Second Place - $150; Third Place - $50
This trophy is awarded to the best entry from a civic organization.
The North Pole Trophy
Cash Prizes: First Place - $200; Second Place - $150; Third Place - $50
This trophy is awarded to the best entry from a commercial business.
Santa's Workshop Trophy
Cash Prizes: First Place - $200; Second Place - $150; Third Place - $50
This trophy is awarded to the best children's-themed or youth group entry.
The Angel Trophy
