SFX – Your “Intro Sketch” theme music.
Tyler enters looking at a calendar. He counts out
15th, 16th … and today is the 17th … which means today is my birthday! Yes! I
can’t wait to see what everyone has planned!
Tyler is freaking out and dancing when Lucy enters.
Tyler! Glad to see you. Think you can take a second to help me out?
Sure, Lucy! What can I do ya for?
Lucy hands Tyler a bag of balloons.
Well, here’s the thing. I’m swamped and have to run to the store to buy a zipper
for a project I’m working on. You think you might be able to blow up some of
these balloons for me?
Why do you need me to blow up balloons?
Because they’re aesthetically pleasing! Now can you do it?
Great! Now if you could get to work on that, I’ll be back in just a few minutes.
Lucy starts to exit.
(trying to be smooth, but not succeeding)
Hey, Lucy, do you have any, like, plans for later on today?
Hmmm … not that I can think of. OH! WAIT!
Lucy approaches Tyler, giving him false hope.
There is one special guy that I have to wish a very, very happy birthday to. And
that special guy is … Abe Vigoda! …(Thinks for a moment.) Wait … he was born
in February. Nope, nothing I can think of. See you later, Tyler!
Lucy exits. Tyler opens the bag of balloons, takes
one out, and starts blowing it up. As he gets one
almost all the way full of air, JJ enters right behind
Tyler, surprised, lets the balloon go. It flies around.
Tyler gasps for air.
Woah! JJ! Don’t sneak up on me like that. I was just blowing up these balloons
for Lucy and …
That’s great, buddy! Listen, can I get you to do me a big favor? I need to find
some candles. Can you keep an eye on the cake I have in the oven?
Sure, but why are you making a cake?
Tyler, surely I don’t need a reason to make a cake.
You have a good point, J Man!
JJ gestures toward backstage.
So, like I said, just keep an eye on the cake and make sure it doesn’t burn. That
would be a major bummer.
Got it! Ummm … would it be possible to maybe get a piece after it’s made?
Tyler! This cake is for the birthday boy. Why would you want to take Abe
Vigoda’s cake? He has so few pleasures left.
Hmmm, this Abe Vigoda must be the new kid at school. I gotta meet this guy.
Tyler is blowing up a balloon and craning his neck
backstage to keep an eye on the cake. He looks
super awkward. Megan enters in a spot Tyler can’t
Tyler, surprised, lets the balloon go and spins
around wildly. He is out of breath.
Whoa! Megan, I didn’t see you coming! I was just working on blowing up some
balloons for Lucy and JJ told me to look out for the cake and I …
Right! They told me. BUT, just really quickly, could I get you to do something for
Uhh … sure. What is it?
Megan hands Tyler several rolls of streamers.
I need to go to the store to get some more drawing supplies. Could you unroll
some of these for me?
Sure, but why do you need them unrolled?
Because they’re aesthetically pleasing! Now can you do it?
(snaps to attention, less enthusiastically than before)
Yes, Megan! Hey … can you think of any reason this day might be … I dunno,
Hmmm … special day. WAIT! I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT!
Tyler is very excited.
Happy Easter Eve Eve Eve Eve Eve Eve Eve! (Reaches into her pocket and
pulls out a Cadbury Creme Egg®.) Here you go!
Oh … I feel bad. I didn’t get you anything.
Oh? That’s okay. I don’t require awesome, thoughtful gifts. Your friendship is gift
enough. Now, back to those streamers!
Megan exits. Tyler checks all the entrances to
make sure he isn’t going to be interrupted. He
starts blowing up a balloon, unrolling streamers,
and looking at the cake.
SFX – Cell phone ringtone (appropriate for Tyler).
Tyler freaks out. The balloon goes flying and he
flings some streamers across the stage. He looks
around frantically and finally realizes his cell phone
is ringing. He pulls it out of his pocket.
Why does this keep happening? (Answers phone. Still trying to unroll and hang
streamers) Hey, Mom! I’m glad you called. I’m having sort of a rough … what?
Yeah, I can go pick up some pizza. What toppings? Sausage and onion??
(sounds disappointed)… and … that’s it? I just really like pepperoni. But, Mom,
today is my …(sniffing he smells something burning)
Smoke alarm sounds. Tyler starts freaking out.
The CAKE!!! Mom, I have to go! Love you. Bye!
Tyler rushes backstage. After a few beats he re-
enters wearing oven mitts and carrying a charred
cake pan. (If you can make it smoke, that would be
great.) He puts it down center stage.
Aww, man! I can’t believe I burnt the cake! But why did they give me all this stuff
to do? And did no one even remember my birthday? I’m trying to be humble, but
this is ridiculous.
Tyler exits, discouraged. Lucy enters carrying a
shopping bag, doesn’t look up.
All right, Tyler, thanks for blowing up the … (finally looks up) … cake. No amount
of icing is going to cover that piece of charcoal. Hmm, wonder where he went?
Lucy picks up the cake and exits. She leaves the
balloons and streamers.

Lucy, Megan, and JJ all meet at center stage,
coming in from various entrances. They all meet,
talking at the same time. Until Lucy says, “WAIT,”
all dialogue is overlapping.
Do any of you know why these balloons aren’t blown up? We’ve only got a little
bit before …
You guys, what happened to my cake? I checked the oven and can’t find it
anywhere. I need icing for …
Heyyyy, these streamers are all over the place. Do we need to decorate a
different area or is this …
WAIT! What’s going on? Where’s Tyler? I asked him to blow up some balloons
but then he disappeared.
Yea. I asked him to keep an eye on my cake, which is now gone. So …
Me too! I asked him to unroll streamers while watching the cake and blowing up
Why do you need streamers unrolled? Can’t you just hold one end and toss
I’m not good with all of this pressure!
Tyler enters. He is obviously despondent.
(barely looking at them)
(whispering to Megan and JJ)
Ahhh. I think I know what happened. JJ, do you have a backup cake?
I can use the left over batter to make some cupcakes!
Perfect! Megan, can you finish blowing up these balloons for me?
Wonderful, while you guys get everything ready I’m going to talk to Tyler.
Lucy hands Megan the balloons. JJ and Megan
Tyler, you don’t seem your normal self. What’s wrong?
Oh, it’s nothing.
Come on, now. I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t want to know.
Well … it’s just been a really hard day. I mean, I’m trying to do what everybody
That’s never easy.
Tell me about it. When you’ve got everyone saying, “Do this, Tyler,” or, “Do that,
Tyler.” And sometimes you just can’t get all the streamers straightened, you
I think so.
But today it’s been really hard because it’s my … I mean, well, I thought it might
be different, but it turns out I’m just last again.
Last? What gave you the idea that you were last?
Because I always am. Even today on my birth… I mean even, you know, today,
some kid named Abe Vigoda gets all the attention.
Well, I know what you mean, Tyler. Everybody feels that way every now and
then. But what if somebody really important went to a lot of time and trouble to
put you first?
Like that’ll ever happen.
It already did. This is the time of year when we remember that Jesus, God’s Son,
gave up His life for us. He died and He did it for you, Tyler. Jesus put you first
when He died on the cross.
Whoa. That’s pretty awesome.
Yeah, and His example is a great reason to recognize the people in your life and
put them first.
I guess you’re right. I just forgot because today is … well, it’s my … I guess I was
putting me first and not little Abe Vigoda.
Tyler … never mind. Look, I think you know how important you are to God. But
there is one thing I’m pretty sure you don’t know, and that’s how important you
are to all of your friends. So I have just one thing to say to you.
Suddenly JJ and Megan explode from backstage.
JJ is carrying cupcakes. Megan is carrying gifts.
She also tosses some balloons into the air. Tyler is
JJ AND MEGAN
Whoa! You guys, what is going on? You knew it was my birthday?
Of course. We wanted to throw you a surprise party, but we were so busy doing
your presents that we didn’t have time for decorations. So we enlisted you,
buddy. Speaking of, here are some super delicious cupcakes I made for you.
Awesome, Thanks JJ! They look so good.
And we all pitched in and ordered you a new tri-pod for your camera on Amazon.
It should be delivered this afternoon.
Lucy takes a package from Megan and gives it to
And I made you a new camera bag with pockets for all of your cords.
What? I needed a new bag! How did you know that?
Your mom told me. And she wanted me to let you know that you can’t stay at the
clubhouse for too long. She and your dad are going to take you to the
Videographers Expo downtown!
What?! But tickets were sold out!
They bought 3 tickets months ago! That’s why she got the pizza for your
brothers. This is a special treat for you on your birthday.
Guys, this is the best! I can’t thank you all enough. I need to head home to make
sure I’m at the arena on time, doors open at 2!
Tyler exits, then quickly enters.
Seriously, you guys, this is the second best present I could ever ask for.
They do a group hug and exit.

This is the best birthday ever. Thanks, guys. Woo-hoo!
Putting other people first always reminds me of what Jesus did for me. Thanks,
Tyler, for giving us a great opportunity.
