14.09 Refrigerators: Medication Storage, Specimens, and Food Page 1 of 1 SATILLA COMMUNITY SERVICES POLICY: #14.09 AND FOOD REFRIGERATORS: MEDICATION STORAGE, SPECIMENS, ORIGINATED: 05/07 Revised: 06/07, 11/08, 01/09 POLICY STATEMENT: It is the policy of Satilla Community Services to ensure that all medications utilized by St. Illa Crisis Stabilization Unit will be stored in the nurse’s medication room, refrigerator for medications or in the pharmacy. The rooms will be locked at all times. Access is restricted to licensed nurses, pharmacists and physicians. It is also the policy of Satilla Community Services to ensure all refrigerators are cleaned routinely and kept at the regulated temperatures. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To assure that medications, specimens, and food is stored in an appropriate manner. IMPLEMENTATION/PROCEDURE: 1. The medication room is locked at all times. Keys to this room are restricted to the medication nurse and pharmacist. All medication room refrigerators, specimen storage refrigerator, and refrigerators where food is housed will be kept at a temperature of 36-46 degrees F. The nursing department will check the interior temperature daily and the information will be recorded on the daily log. When interior temperatures are outside the acceptable limits, the refrigerator will be closed and checked again in one (1) and two (2) hours. If the temperature remains outside the acceptable limits, the IT Department will be notified of the problem. The drugs stored in the refrigerator will be arranged in a neat, orderly manner which will provide readily available access to the drug identity. All refrigerators will be cleaned with an approved cleansing agent monthly. 2. 3.
