lines the tremendous importance of
China and its market to Wall Street
inanciers and corporate leaders, who
have become increasingly anxious as
security and economic frictions grow
between China and the West.
Mr Schwarzman said his goal was
to reduce such tensions by educating
the world’s future leaders, but his role
in the project will also raise his politi-
cal proile in China, potentially giving
him and his private equity irm, the
Blackstone Group, increased access
to Chinese leaders, including new Chi-
nese President Xi Jinping, who previ-
ously attended Tsinghua.
Mr Schwarzman said he was do-
nating US$100 million from his per-
sonal fortune, which Forbes estimated
last month at US$6.5 billion. He plans
to raise another US$200 million, add-
ing that he had raised US$100 million
from donors and expects to raise the
remaining by the end of this year.
Most of the donors have sprawling
business interests in China and fre-
quently deal with government regula-
tors and state-owned enterprises that
have wide discretion over the activi-
ties of foreign companies.
    Many large Western companies
have been pressing for closer ties with
China, even though security experts
warn about China’s military expan-
sion and territorial claims and many
smaller businesses and labour groups
warn that China seeks to dominate a
wide range of industries.
    Mr Schwarzman said his concern
was that as long as the Chinese econo-
my grows two to three times as quick-
ly as the American economy and with
European economies barely growing
at all, tensions are only likely to rise.
“The idea was to deal with this
problem in a generational manner,”
he said in a video interview from
New York, adding later in an email:

The contest is even more intense
for the Tambunan state seat, where
ive candidates will be vying for votes.
But Mr Pairin knows that whatever
the results of the general election, the
Kadazandusun people, of which he is
one, will play a prominent role in Sabah
politics. The state’s electorate of some
980,000 voters is made up of an esti-
mated 30 per cent of Kadazandusun,
who hail from two indigenous tribes.
    Nevertheless, he stressed the
need for equal opportunities for all in
Sabah. “No one should be left out in
the name of development. There’s a
lot that can be done but the most im-
portant thing is fairness to all races
if the people and state of Sabah are to
be transformed.”
Mr Pairin noted that he has “no re-
grets” in politics whether he wins or
loses in these elections. “In politics,
we are guided by the people we serve
and we are also guided by our men-
tors, people we look up to for leader-
ship,” he said.
And even after his retirement from
politics, he said he “can always serve
in other capacity (and) provide other
forms of leadership”.
He added that his wife, with whom
he has two sons who are both lawyers,
is urging him to write his memoirs.
“Or maybe I can go back to lectur-
ing in the university. Or look after the
grandchildren. Or maybe learn new
things. Life must go on,” he said.
“I will be occupied for sure. Not po-
litically, maybe, but life goes on.”
