LEC plant growth facilities pro forma: guidance notes This form is designed primarily to help plan the efficient use and allocation of our plant growth spaces. Please note that, while every effort will be made to match your requirements to the available facilities, completing this form does not guarantee space with particular conditions. Final allocation will be made by the plant environment management group (PEMG) once funding is confirmed. You must fully cost the space that you require, and the form has been automated as much as possible to help you do this Section 1: Type of Space and area required Glasshouses and CE rooms are within the LEC complex. Solardomes, polytunnels and standing out areas will be at the Hazelrigg field site when completed. Glasshouse space will be allocated unless clear justification is offered for the tighter environmental control provided by the CE rooms. The growing area in each module is as follows: glasshouses 9m2 of bench space, and 15m2 total floor area, CE rooms provide 6m2 under the lights. If you require less than these areas you will share growing space with other users. Exceptions will be made if there are clear scientific/practical reasons for not sharing, eg light treatments, transmittable pests or pathogens etc. These must be stated in section 5b (page 2). Long term bookings (i.e. over 6 months) must submit an experimental schedule and may book space for a percentage of the full term so that space may be allocated to other users when not fully used. Experiments may be moved to alternative locations if space is being under-utilised or used inappropriately. Section 2) Glasshouse environment required. All glasshouses have heating, solar shading, top and bottom ventilation and supplementary lighting (approx 150 μmole PAR m-2 s-1 at bench height. Osram Plantastar sodium lamps). The specified minimum temperatures can be controlled via the heating system, but the maximum temperature cannot be precisely specified given the limits of shading and ventilation. Cooling units are provided only in the three high containment GM modules, and are designed to minimise over -heating during summer, not to maintain a specific maximum. Section 3 Environment: CE rooms All CE rooms have:Lighting. Basic provision in all rooms is approx 150 μmole PAR m-2 s-1 at bench height, with the option of up-grading to approx 450 μmole PAR m-2 s-1 at bench height (Osram HQI lamps). Heating. The maximum is 25+2°C with the lights off, 30+2°C with the lights on. Cooling. The minimum is 15+2°C with the full (450 μmole PAR m-2 s-1) lighting switch on. Humidity control is not currently provided. There is now a suite of six high-performance CE cabinets. These are reserved for experiments requiring very specific conditions (e.g. high light up to 1000 μmole PAR m-2 s-1, control of spectral balance, replicated gas treatments) or tight control of temperature, humidity or CO2. If your environmental requirements cannot be met by the standard CE rooms, it may be necessary to consider using the CE cabinets, if available. Type of research/teaching You need to fill in details of the type of use, and funder (if relevant). Please complete the details, and costing for all use, even if you will not be charged. Section 5 Costs. Page 2 of the form automatically calculates the costs using the data you provide on page 1. Charges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change particularly as the University moves toward Full Economic Costing. The running costs include an element of technical support necessary to maintain the facility and deal with special issues like pest and disease control, but not watering or routine plant maintenance, which will be the responsibility of individual researchers. Currently all PhD students registered with BS,ES or Geography are automatically exempt from charges, (provided the space is exclusively for their use),students from other departments must pay the charges. Space booked on behalf of visiting researchers is charged at normal rates. In some circumstances the Head of Biological Sciences may use his discretion to waive all or part of the space charges for researchers who have insufficient funds to cover the cost. A member of the research group must discuss this with HoD and get his agreement at the time of booking.
