However, positions are also available for attorneys to work directly on more traditional legal issues. • Environmental litigation positions: Working with the National Environmental Law Center, a PIRG-founded litigation center dedicated to enforcing the nation's environmental laws, attorneys assist state and local citizen groups by providing essential legal representation and helping bring corporate polluters to justice. • In-house general counsel: The Legal Counsel Team advises the state PIRGs and related organizations across the country in such areas as First Amendment law, employment law, campaign finance law, charitable solicitation regulation, contracts, and corporate and tax matters pertaining to nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS & NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES The state PIRGs have always sought new and innovative strategies to affect social change and build the public interest movement. To that end, the PIRGs have founded a number of socially responsible businesses, as well as creating the Fund for Public Interest Research to provide logistical support for nonprofit advocacy organizations. A selection of our current business ventures and management openings include: • Green Century Capital Management: Green Century administers two no-load environmentally responsible mutual funds, designed to achieve competitive returns while putting investors' money to work for cleaner air, cleaner water, and greater corporate environmental responsibility. Staff work in one of three main arenas: financial operations, product development and marketing, and shareholder advocacy. • Ecopledge.com: An internet-based campaign, Ecopledge.com organizes students and citizens to pledge not to work for, invest in, or purchase from ecologically-irresponsible corporations until they make simple, sensible changes. Staff research potential target companies, develop reform policies and the strategies to bring about their adoption, and negotiate directly with corporate executives. • Partnership Program: The Partnership Program develops citizen outreach programs for a variety of public interest organizations. Current partners include the state PIRGs, the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, the Human Rights Campaign, and Save the Children. The Partnership Program staff will act as a liaison, networking with potential new partner while maintaining relationships with our existing partners. • Prospecting Department: Staff will oversee the Fund for Public Interest Research’s in-house marketing department, developing new analytical tools and outreach strategies to help acquire large numbers of new members for the state PIRGs and our partners.

GRADUATE INTERNSHIPS The state PIRGs offer graduate-level legal and policy internships at each of our advocacy offices throughout the nation, as well as business internships with our sustainable business ventures. Believing that interns are best served by a combination of close mentorship and ever-increasing responsibility, our graduate internships provide the training needed for interns to quickly assume the duties of a PIRG advocate, attorney, or sustainable business staffer. Graduate internships may be funded, with potentially up to $3000 available for each intern.
