ENGL 4/880 - WRITING THEORY & PRACTICE -- "WRITING CENTER CONSULTING"
Students enrolled in Writing Center Theory and Practice (ENGL 4/880) will study the teaching and learning of writing in one-with-
one contexts. In this course we will examine current writing center theory and practice, paying particular attention to the historical and
social contexts for popular conceptions of academic discourses and literacies. We will study the historical role of writing centers in the
democratization of higher education generally and of writing instruction in particular. We will examine the critical role various
identities play in shaping the construction of ―student-writers‖ as the subjects of instruction. We will also study the circulation of
student writing within the academy including the means by which student writing is assigned both use and exchange value. Finally, we
will work collectively and collaboratively to develop individual and shared approaches to responsible and responsive writing center
practice.
