Self Carving Pumpkin 50 mL H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) 20 ML water Several (~7) pea sized chunks of Calcium carbide Tuna can or evaporating dish. Oven mitt or thermal glove (there will be fire) Piezo-electric sparker. Carve out a pumpkin in a simple design. Replace the features, but check that they can easily move in and out of their places. Drill a small hole in the back of the pumpkin and insert the wire ends of the sparker. Ensure that pumpkin flesh has not gummed them up and check to see that the spark is still working. Pour in the peroxide. Place the dish with the calcium carbide in the pumpkin and pour the water into the dish. Replace the pumpkin lid. Wait about 1 minute. Be sure to aim the face away from observers or fragile equipment. Hold the lid on while wearing the oven mitt. You may want to wear earphones and have observers cover their ears. Spark and watch the show!
