World Cultures lesson – The Hindu epic poem, The Ramayana

This lesson is about the epic Hindu poem, Ramayana. The poem focus of the poem is
the life of Rama and his journey, which is what Ramayana means in Sanskrit. It
depicts the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal servant,
the ideal brother, the ideal wife and the ideal king.

Students will read an abridged version of the Ramayana so they are familiar with
the story. Then in groups, they will review the pictures that accompany the epic
poem and discuss the pictures and answer questions that are meant to guide them
through the pictures.

The final group discussion will focus on how the life of Rama and his journey
portrays the Hindu concepts of karma and dharma

This lesson allows the students to use numerous multi-disciplinary skills to
accomplish the tasks, as well as work collaboratively.

The lesson where I got the idea for the above lesson is located at the following
