Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that the body cannot make naturally. It is found in nuts, seeds,
chocolate and raisins.

Arginine is used by the body in the execution of many important physiological processes including
hormone secretion, output of growth hormone, removal of toxins from the body and enhancement of
the immune system. It is also a precursor of nitric oxide which vasodiolates vessels in the body. For
this reason arginine is often used to treat conditions such as angina, high blood pressure, cardiac
disease, sexual dysfunction and infertility. Recent research has also highlighted arginine's ability to
scavenge free radicals, remove bad cholesterol, enhance fat metabolism and regulate salt levels.

There are several reasons why arginine appeals to bodybuilders:

1. It prevents the retention of water under the skin thus minimizing bloating and helping to create a
ripped appearance.

2. It helps the body to retain nitrogen that is essential to the muscle building process.

3. Its vasodilating abilities support muscle growth.

4. It enhances protein synthesis.

5. It helps to boost the immune system allowing harder training and minimizing the minor illnesses that
come from overtraining.

With any amino acid supplement overdosing can lead to weakness and nausea so care should be
taken in applying small doses and increasing them gradually until an optimum level is reached. Bear in
mind that many protein powders and other supplements are fortified with amino acids so check the
labels carefully. The manufacturer's instructions should be followed in all instances.

 There is relatively little extensively written on L-Citrulline. As a supplement, L-Citrulline is usually
described in the context of the supplement that it compliments, L-Arginine. As a supplement the role of
L-Citrulline is relatively simple. L-Citrulline is meant to be converted into L-Arginine by the body. The
addition of L-Citrulline allows for there to be a greater amount of unabsorbed L-Arginine once this
amino acid passes through the digestive system. L-Citrulline and L-Arginine work together to create
synergy. If you are planning on using an L-Citrulline supplement in your diet, you should also be taking
an L-Arginine supplement in order to obtain the desired results.

The recommended daily supplemental dose of L-Citrulline is 200-1000 mg once a day before bed (at
the same time of the day when you ought to be taking your L-Arginine supplement). L-Citrulline
supplements may be difficult to find on their own as they are most likely going to be combined with
L-Arginine or included as a part of a collection of supplements meant to do a number of specific things.
 This is why the dosage amount can vary so greatly. The lowest recommended daily dose is the 200
mg while the most that you will want to take in a 24 hour period should not exceed 1000 mg. You will
need to keep this in mind especially if thus supplement is combined with other supplements that are
taken in high doses or more than once throughout the day.

As is the case with just about anything in this world, you can find L-Citrulline from several sources in
the internet or through companies that offer supplements as part of powder or juice lines. Remember
that as you are looking over dosage information and comparing products that you need to have the
synergy between L-Citrulline and L-Arginine in order to receive the fullest benefits of nitric oxide
production. Taking dosages of L-Citrulline that are too low or absent of L-Arginine will not allow you to
take full advantage of the heart health, improved immunity or increased energy results that you are
looking for. A dosage that is too low will simply be absorbed in the intestinal tract before it can reach
the cells in the remainder of the body.

As with any medication or supplement, it is always a best practice to have a discussion with your
doctor before supplementing your diet. There are some serious consequences that are possible if your
L-Citrulline dosage is not first approved. For example, L-Citrulline can interact with other medication
and lessen the effectiveness of those medications. Perhaps the most dangerous of these medication
interactions is in the case of blood thinners (commonly used to keep blood pressure under control).
The increase in L-Citrulline and L-Arginine may cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure. This is just
one example of how when it comes to improving blood flow you can certainly have too much of a good
thing. There are also situations where one may be being treated for heart disease or another
cardiovascular problem and in these cases both L-Citrulline and L-Arginine might be inappropriate.
Even at the perfect dose, L-Citrulline cannot cure a disease nor can it prevent disease, your personal
physician or specialist are best suited to treat these diseases and their advice should be solicited
whenever you are in doubt regarding the kinds of supplements that are safe and may provide benefits
to you.
