October 3, 2009 from 11-1 PM: Jay Price - "Thanksgiving 1959" With the high school football season in full swing and Westfield off to a fast start, meet Blue Devil assistant coach Joe Avena who will join sportswriter Jay Price. Mr. Price's new book, Thanksgiving 1959. This book tells the story of a simpler time in sports, when one last corner of New York City was like all the other small towns across America where everybody turned out for the Memorial Day Parade and the Thanksgiving Day football game. Joe Avena's central role in Thanksgiving 1959 stems from his days as a player at New Dorp High School on Staten Island under legendary coach Sal Somma, a onetime dropout who kicked the extra point that upset Vince Lombardi and Fordham's famed "Seven Blocks of Granite O ctober 31, 2009 from 11-1 PM: Alexa Zepka - "Kurz or Nothing" A lexa Zepka, Westfield High School student and author of the young adult book, Kurz or Nothing will join us on Saturday, October 24 from 11-1 PM. Kurz or Nothing is an uplifting story about life, passion, and the ultimate drive to achieve one's goals; a story about a girl who loses a dream, but realizes it anyway. It is based upon the true experience of Alexa Zepka, a 2006 alumnae of Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield, who underwent a "shocking" encounter with the school's Teddy Roosevelt Scholar Program. The novel includes characters based on well-known Roosevelt Intermediate School teachers such as: Mr. Marc Biunno, Mr. Robert Hild, and Mr. Glenn Kurz.
