THE SERVICE OF TENEBRAE Supplies: There is a “Deacons‟ Maundy Thursday” supply box that has 7 appropriately sized candles and candle holders as well as two snuffers specifically for the Tenebrae service. The box is placed in the storage cabinets in Fellowship Hall in the very last cabinet (closest to the stage). The cabinet is currently labeled “150 th Anniversary”. Coordination with Organist/Music Director: the Deacon organizing the Tenebrae service should coordinate with the Organist/Music Director. The choir/soloist sing six times in the service. It is useful for the Organist to have a copy of the script. In particular, point out that the Organist should turn off the organ light as soon as possible so that there are no light sources when the last candle is extinguished and then relit. The solo is usually sung a cappella, so it is probably possible to turn off the organ light prior to the solo. If the soloist is using a light, that should also be turned off. Rehearsal: Usually, one rehearsal a week or two before Maundy Thursday and a runthrough the evening of the service is sufficient. Parts (eight total, decreasing number of lines): Evangelist, Jesus, High Priest, Centurion, Peter, Judas, 1 st Disciple, 2 nd Disciple Dress: Deacons with a reading part should wear dark clothes preferably black. Deacons Positions to start: Evangelist at Pulpit (Standing); High Priest at Lectern side(seated); Centurion at Lectern side (seated); At table from left to right as you face table from congregation: 1 st Disciple, Peter, Jesus, 2 nd Disciple, Judas (all seated) On table: 7 Candles-tallest in center. Keep matches or a lighter near the center of the table for Jesus to use to relight a candle at the end. And, place one snuffer on each end of the table. Microphones: At the table, optimally three mikes should be used. Jesus should have (and wear) a wireless mike. Then there should be one mike on each end of the table. Wireless mikes can be used at the ends and passed from person to person during the reading. Or, regular mikes could be set up.
The Shadow of Betrayal
(Matthew 26: 20-25)
When it was time for the Passover Supper, he sat down with the twelve disciples – and during supper he said, I tell you this; one of you will betray me. In great distress, they exclaimed one after the other: Can you mean me, Lord?
Jesus: Evangelist: 1st Disciple:
2nd Disciple: Lord, is it I? Jesus: One of you who has dipped his hand into this bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man is going along the road selected for him in the scriptures – but alas for that person who betrays the Son of Man. It would be better for him if he had never been born. Then Judas the betrayer answered by saying: Rabbi, can you mean me? You have spoken – the words are yours.
Evangelist: Judas: Jesus:

The Shadow of Desertion
(Matthew 26: 30-35)
After singing the Passover hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them: Tonight you will all fall from your faith because of me – for it is written: “I will strike the shepherd down and the sheep of his flock will be scattered. But after I am raised again, I will go on ahead of you into Galilee.” Even though everyone else falls from their faith because of you, I never will. I tell you, tonight before the cock crows, you will disown me three times. Even if I must die with you, I will never disown you. And all the disciples said the same.

The Shadow of Loneliness
(Luke 22: 39-46; Mark 14: 43-65))
Then he went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, accompanied by the disciples. When he reached the place he said to them: Pray that you may be spared the hour of testing. Then he withdrew from them, about a stone‟s throw, knelt down, and began to pray: Father, if it be thy will, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but thine be done. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven bringing him strength, and, being in such agony, he prayed all the more urgently; and his sweat was like clots of blood dropping on the ground. When he rose from his prayer and came to the disciples, he found them asleep, worn out from grief. He said to them: Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may be spared the test.

The Shadow of Desolation
Evangelist: Suddenly, while Jesus was speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, appeared, and with him was a crowd armed with swords and cudgels, sent by the chief priests, lawyers and elders. Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them:
Judas: (Speaks from lectern) : The one I kiss is your man; seize him and get him safely away. Evangelist: When Judas arrived, he went straight to Jesus and said: Rabbi. . .rabbi. . .
Judas: (Walking to table, behind and to side of Jesus): Evangelist:
. . .and kissed him. Then they seized him and held him firmly. Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck at the High Priest‟s servant, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus spoke: Do you take me for a robber that you have come out with swords and cudgels to arrest me? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not lay hands on me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled.
During next reading by Evangelist, starting after first sentence, all Disciples leave table slowly and one by one, first Judas, then others; walk down steps to sit in front pew off to piano side. High priest steps to the Lectern. Evangelist: Then the disciples deserted him and ran away. Among those following was a young man with nothing on but a linen cloth. They tried to seize him but he slipped out of the linen cloth and ran away naked. Then they led Jesus away to the High Priest‟s house, where the chief priests, elders, and doctors of the law were all assembling. Peter followed him at a distance, right into the High Priest‟s courtyard; and there he remained, sitting among the attendants, warming himself at the fire. The chief priests and the whole council tried to find some evidence against Jesus to warrant a death sentence, but failed to find any. Many gave false evidence against him: “We heard him say, „I will destroy this temple that was made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.‟” But even on this point their evidence did not agree. Then the High Priest stood up in his place, and questioned Jesus:
High Priest (from lectern): Have you no answer to the charges that these witnesses bring against you? Evangelist: But he kept silent, making no reply. Again the High Priest questioned him:
High Priest: Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One? Jesus: I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated on the right hand of the Power and coming from the clouds of heaven. Then the High Priest tore his robes and said:
High Priest: Need we call witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What is your opinion? Evangelist: Their judgment was unanimous: that he was guilty and should be put to death. And some began to spit on him, blindfolded him, and struck him with their fists, crying out, “Prophesy!”. And the High Priest‟s men also struck him with open hands.

The Shadow of Crucifixion
(Matthew 27: 27-38)
Then Pilate‟s soldiers took Jesus into the Governor‟s headquarters, where they collected the whole company around him. First, they stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe. They plaited a crown of thorns and placed it on his head, put a cane in his right hand as a scepter, and kneeling before him, they mocked him saying: Hail King of the Jews! They spat on him, and used the cane to beat him about the head. Finally, when the mockery was over, they took off the robe and dressed him in his own clothes. Then they led him away to be crucified. On the way out they met a man from Cyrene, Simon by name, and pressed him into service to carry his cross. When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of a Skull”), they gave him vinegar to drink mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink. After fastening him to the cross, they divided his clothes among them by casting lots, and then sat down there to keep watch. Over his head was placed an inscription giving the charge against him; “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” Two thieves were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left.

The Shadow of Death
Luke 23: 44-49)
By now it was about midday, and there came a darkness over the whole land, which lasted until three in the afternoon. The sun was in eclipse. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus gave a loud cry and said: Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. And with these words he died. The centurion saw it all, and gave praise to God, saying: Beyond all doubt, this man was innocent. When the people who had assembled for the spectacle saw what had happened, they went home beating their breasts. His friends had all been standing at a distance. The women who had accompanied him from Galilee stood with them and watched it all. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen cloth according to Jewish burial customs. Now at the place where he had been crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb not yet used for burial. There, because the tomb was near at hand and it was the eve of the Jewish Sabbath, they laid Jesus.
