INTRODUCTION

  1 Introduction
1.1 What is this Report About?

This report offers detailed analysis on the market size and forecast of the Military Fixed-Wing Aircraft market
for India over the next ten years, 2013–2023.

  1.2 Definitions

For the purposes of this report, the following timeframes apply:

                 Forecast Period: 2013 to 2023

The following are definitions of military expenditure:

Capital expenditure (CAPEX) covers research and development (R&D), procurement, maintenance,
transportation, and the storage of weaponry and other equipment. It also includes expenditure on
fixed-wing aircraft and aero-engines, heavy and medium vehicles, naval equipment, and expenditure
on the purchase of land, construction plants, and machinery

                                                                                                                          5
INTRODUCTION

The following are definitions of military aircraft categories:

Attack aircraft are equipped to strike ground or naval targets. This might include providing close-air
support for friendly troops via the destruction of heavily armored or dug-in enemy forces, elimination
of enemy anti-air batteries and radar neutralization, or strategic destruction of high-value enemy
targets. In this report air-to-air fighter aircraft have also been included in this category.
Transport aircraft are used to deliver troops, weapons and other military equipment by a variety of
methods to any area of military operations around the surface of the planet. In this report we have
also included aerial refueling tankers and V-22 Osprey which is a tilt rotor aircraft in this category.
Multi-role aircraft is an aircraft designed to act in at least two different roles in combat. The primary
role is usually a fighter. Hence, it is as often called a multirole fighter while the secondary role is
usually air-to-surface attack. More roles can be added such as air reconnaissance, forward air
              control, and electronic warfare.
Training aircraft is a class of aircraft designed specifically to facilitate in-flight training of pilots and
aircrews. The use of a dedicated trainer aircraft with additional safety features such as tandem flight
controls, forgiving flight characteristics and a simplified cockpit arrangement allows pilots-in-training to
safely advance their real-time piloting, navigation and war fighting skills without the danger of
overextending their abilities alone in a fully featured aircraft.
Reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft is an aircraft used for surveillance and collecting
information over time. They are operated by military forces and other government agencies in roles
such as intelligence gathering, battlefield surveillance, airspace surveillance, observation and border
              patrol.
Bombers are military aircraft designed to attack ground and sea targets, by dropping bombs on them,
or by launching cruise missiles at them.

     The following are miscellaneous definitions:

Network-Centric Warfare (NCW) focuses on the effective linking and networking of forces dispersed
across the battlefield, enabling the real-time transfer of information to generate a clear situational
              awareness, resulting in combat effectiveness
Asymmetric Warfare is a type of conflict in which a weaker force exploits the weaknesses of a
better-aligned and technologically superior enemy by adopting strategies and tactics to offset its
deficiencies. Examples of asymmetric warfare include guerrilla warfare, insurgency, terrorism, and
              urban warfare
Command, Control, Communications Computers and Intelligence Systems (C4I) refers to an
information system employed by a military’s top command to direct its forces. This system provides
the military with information on various parameters associated with executing a strategy during a
military exercise. The parameters include re
