Purpose. The purpose of this memorandum is to describe A Resource of Instructional Modifications and Accommodations for General Education and Special Education. Effective. Immediately. November 10, 1999. This memorandum supersedes SPM 5568 released on

Applicability. This memorandum applies to principals, special and general education teachers and teacher aides, and Special Education personnel. Objective. The objective of A Resource of Instructional Modifications and Accommodations for General Education and Special Education is to provide guidance to Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committees and school staff in identifying appropriate accommodations and instructional modifications for diverse learners. General Description. A Resource of Instructional Modifications and Accommodations for General Education and Special Education is a district manual that provides procedures for special and general education teachers to identify and implement instructional modifications and accommodations identified by the ARD committee, Section 504 committee, student intervention assistance team, and others as appropriate. The manual contains the following sections: a. Table of Contents. This section contains a table of contents for the manual and a copy of this Standard Practice Memorandum. Section 1 - Mission Statement. Special Education. This section outlines the mission statement of

Section 2 - Introduction. This section contains key points for ARD committees to discuss regarding instructional modifications and accommodations and outlines general strategies for adapting curriculum and instruction to inclusive classrooms. Section 3 - Process for Selecting Modifications and Accommodations. This section contains guidelines for selection of modifications and accommodations for reading, writing, mathematics, oral communication, behavior and social skills, self esteem, organization, study skills, attention deficit disorder, and visual and auditory impairments.

Section 4 - Accommodations and Modifications for Students with Alternate Languages. This section contains strategies for teaching and adapting materials for students with alternate language needs. Section 5 - Strategies for Modifications and Accommodations for Content Area Instruction. This section contains examples of strategies for content area (i. e., social studies, science, English, and language arts) modifications. Section 6 - Appendix. This section contains examples of instructional strategies for implementing modifications for individuals with auditory impairments.

Responsibility. The Director, Elementary Instructional Support Services, is responsible for the following:    Publishing and maintaining new and revised A Resource of Instructional Modifications and Accommodations for General Education and Special Education manuals; Periodically reviewing and updating the contents within the manual; and Maintaining records of the number of manuals issued to facilitate distribution of revisions.

Distribution. A Resource of Instructional Modifications and Accommodations for General Education and Special Education is available for distribution through the warehouse (#675). Consultation.
