   Join Taronga Zoo for National Literacy and Numeracy Week with one of Australia’s finest children’s authors and
   illustrators – Garry Fleming. .

   Garry will share one of his superbly-illustrated and hugely successful picture books, ‘Bollygum’. This dynamic and
   interactive workshop includes a book reading by Garry, an explanation on the inspiration behind the ‘Bollygum’
   wombat character, literacy aspects to engage the reader and an interactive demonstration on how to draw some
   amazing Australian animals. Your students will also meet live Australian wildlife presented by a Zoo Educator to
   foster a love for our native animal icons and the wonderful world of books.

   Workshops are best suited to the Year 2 to 6 age group.

   Workshop options
   OPTION ONE: Meet the animals and authors in person at Taronga Zoo, Sydney

   Book a face to face session at Taronga Zoo, Sydney. Cost is $16 per student and includes entry to the Zoo.

   animal encounter, an Author and Zoo Educator talk in the Zoo lecture theatre and ‘how do draw Australian animals’

  Session Description

  “Amongst our forests and woodlands there are untouched pockets where time stands still. This is the story of such a
  place. This is the story of Bollygum.”

  The story of ‘Bollygum’ is truly magical. Join author and illustrator, Garry Fleming, as he reads from this amazing
                                         book and brings the characters to life, with a Zoo Educator and real Australian

                                                Garry will talk about his life growing up in the country and how his childhood
                                                inspired him to become an illustrator and author. He will also discuss his deep
                                                connection to animals why he only writes about them and draws them in his

                                                Garry will discuss the importance of visual literacy and the techniques he uses
                                                in his illustrations to enhance emotion and help the reader connect with the
                                                characters in the story.

                                                Your students will be amazed to hear that a unique theme park called
                                                ‘Bollygum’ has been created in the Kinglake Ranges, Victoria which truly
                                                captures the essence of Garry’s enchanting story.

                                        Garry will also run a ‘how to draw’ demonstration featuring the Australian
                                        animals featured in his books. Your students will also meet live Australian
  wildlife and learn about their amazing abilities and how important it is for us to help protect them.

  Question time will be allowed throughout the presentation and hands-on encounters are offered at the Zoo workshop

  Please ensure your students have 3 sheets of A4 paper, a backing board and a sketching pencil for the workshop.
