In a brIllIant combInatIon of talent and style, two of the world’s top desIgners are collaboratIng on a remarkable vIlla project. the much antIcIpated Cape Yamu vIlla development, located on a stunnIng prIvate penInsula on the serene east coast of phuket, brIngs together the world class desIgn talents of Jean-miChel GathY, known locally for hIs work on the amanpurI resort, and uber hIp InterIor desIgn maverIck philippe StarCk.
Cape Yamu is a secure gated community and lifestyle where the fortunate owners have the advantage of living surrounded by the waters of phang nga bay whilst to the north the yamu district is blossoming. each villa in the estate sets on an extensive plot of land which varies in size from 2 to 5 rai (one to 2.5 acres) on the peninsula filled with trees and at least 180 degree views of the sea. some villa sites are almost at sea level while others rise in various elevations to reach the peninsula’s hilly centre which adds drama and natural beauty. cape yamu is more than a private oasis of peace, privacy, seclusion and space. there’s a clubhouse which will become a focal point for this exclusive community. clubhouse amenities will include a restaurant/bar, delicatessen, full service spa, tennis courts and a gym. cape yamu has also attracted the attention of one’s of the world’s leading resort owners. when adrian Zecha, founder of the world’s elite aman resorts, was taken on an inspection of cape yamu peninsula, he climbed to the highest point, and so impressed with the beauty of the location, announced “I’ll build you a resort right here.” he then brought in Jean-michel Gathy to consult on designs for the entire space. gathy has a reputation with high end projects for interpreting the buildings to fit naturally into the landscape. In his work with aman resorts, he pioneered the tropical villa concept where maximum exposure to natural light and soothing trade winds fill the open salas and private spaces set around a central pool. at the aman-i-khas, a luxury wilderness camp in rajasthan, India, gathy created guest accommodations and public amenities from 14 separate tents which seem sculpted into a backdrop of dry, brush covered hills. he has even worked in remote areas of myanmar (burma) designing bungalows at the lisu resort to build an eco-resort that attracts the well heeled adventurer. using the indigenous native architecture, gathy created spaces of indulgence and luxury, maximizing views and ensuring an environment that would replenish mind, body and spirit. gathy comes to the cape yamu villa project with an experienced vision on building villas that will provide comfort and relaxation.
the cape yamu development is a project of Campbell kane (thailand) which is active with commercial, residential and hotel projects around asia. Ian henry is a director of the company. “when we first saw cape yamu, immediately we could see the value in its isolation and natural beauty and felt it deserved special treatment. we decided to invite some of the world’s top designers to create an environment that would ensure that cape yamu became a premier address in phuket.” says Ian. “we feel that both gathy and starck will add a massive amount of experience, excitement and pizzazz to the project.” philippe Starck was approached directly through his development company, YOO Corporation of london, which he owns with the property developer john hitchcox. they flew to phuket to inspect the site and immediately decided to add cape yamu to their design projects. starck has become an international sensation from his extensive collection of designer commodities to innovative interiors at the peninsula hotel restaurant in hong kong, the teatron in mexico, the hotel delano in miami and the mondrian
hotel in los angeles. his design products have been exhibited in museums in paris, new york, munich, london and tokyo which demonstrate how his funky and eclectic designs have changed the realities of how the world views good design. yoo corporation has shaken the world of design but also surprised with their versatility. starck designed the private rooms in the elysee palace in paris and has been acknowledged by his design contemporaries with awards as the good design award (1995 and 2000). he will bring his imagination and innovation to the phuket project creating interiors that will be unique to southeast asia. It will also be the only collaboration between starck and gathy as starck is careful to keep each project unique. cape yamu is a boutique development of 33 villas with three different sizes and personalities. a harmonious architectural style marks each villa design with subtle variations based on the varied topography and size of each site. the main architectural element that gives these villas drama and high style is the 130 square metre lounge and dining pavilion with seven metre vaulted ceilings and a dramatic cathedral view out onto the surrounding phang nga bay.
bedrooms are a spacious 50 to 65 square metres designed large enough to reflect the natural surroundings, encourage airflow and maintain the luxury of space that is the predominant theme of cape yamu. all villas offer media rooms with options for television or movie rooms, a study or office space and room for a pool table or other indoor recreations. large private swimming pools complete the amenities for play. the villas have been designed to take advantage of views and the special personality of the landscape. one villa type takes advantage of the less steep sites and incorporates much of the buildings into the large grounds. a huge outdoor barbecue and pool area makes for an outstanding integrated indoor to outdoor design. another villa design has been drawn for the wider sites. this type is larger with enormous wide open spaces and features including options for an additional guest villa. the third villa concept has been created for the steeper sites and is more integrated in design with the landscape and views adding drama to the home. “we invited royal hands to design a natural landscape for cape yamu featuring native palms and expanses of lawn,” continues Ian.
“with the intense beauty of the location, the changes of light and moods of the sea, we felt very protective of the landscape and want to keep it in its natural state as much as possible.” royal hands are well respected in thailand and under the direction of thanyawe (rohan) sinjira, the company planned the interior plantings at the Chiva Som international health resort in hua hin as well as victory monument and the rama 9 royal park in bangkok. his most noted private client is the prime minister of thailand, taksin shinawatra, who invited royal hands to landscape his villa at the cha am beach resort. cape yamu has set the highest standard for villa development on phuket. the stunning natural location, a wealth of facilities and the special talents of the team of designers, ensure that it will become an exciting destination.
