Get Involved Fayre The ‘Get Involved Fayre’, on Tuesday 17th September, provided a focal point for all sports and societies to attract student members. The event ran from 10am to 3pm with over forty different stalls set up in the refectory extension, offering students the opportunity to find out more about all the Students’ Association. Sports Come and Try First year students had the opportunity to try out Arc based sports clubs for free before the regular activity started in week 1. The Sessions on the 17 th and 18th September included badminton, basketball (m&w), cricket, martial arts, trampolining, gymnastics, table tennis, volleyball, football (m&w) and netball. Freshers Intervarsity Sports Day The 6th Annual Freshers Intervarsity Sports Day took place on Wednesday 1 st October. First year students from Strathclyde, Glasgow and Caledonian had the chance to sample a flavour of what university sport is all about at this fun inter university competition. The event took place in the Arc, Garscube Sports

Complex and Strathclyde Sports Hall. Students participated in seven different sports: Basketball, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Swimming and Volleyball. Involvement and Activities Sports clubs continue to benefit from a positive relationship with the Arc via the joint membership (ACTIVE student) and have a comparable membership figure to last year. There are now over one hundred volunteer committee members within the following twenty eight sports clubs: American Football, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball (m), Basketball (w), Cricket, Football (w), Football (m), Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey (w), Hockey (m), Horse Riding, Karate (Tei), Kayaking, Muay Thai, Mountaineering, Netball, Rowing, Rugby (m), Skiing, Snowboarding, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwon-Do, Trampolining, Volleyball (m), Volleyball (w). Sports Bursary Programme GCUSA continues to make a positive contribution to the university’s sports bursary programme. As well as committing funding to the programme the VPSS sits on the interview panel for selection. For the third year in a row GCUSA organised a welcome event for the athletes. The morning event was attended by eleven student bursars, the Principal, sabbatical officers, Sports Policy Group students and Arc staff. The event provided an opportunity to welcome new students and to promote the programme. GCUSA also designs and prints two Sports Bursary Programme posters displayed in the Arc and North Hanover Building. Policy The Sports Policy Group met nine times during Semester A and B, discussion topics included funding allocations, initiations, equipment management, alcohol in minibuses, coaching, sports alumni group, sports awards, sports ball and policy changes. Health and Safety During the committee training all sports volunteers received training in relation to health, safety and risk assessment. All sports club have completed a generic risk assessment for their activity and submitted an updated code of practice. Sixteen student volunteers from sports clubs attended an appointed person first aid course. During Semester A and B twelve first aid kits were issued to off campus sports clubs. Alumni Sports Event Working in conjunction with the universities Alumni staff, three student v alumni sports matches in rugby (22-22 draw), football (5-2 to students) and hockey (5-3 to graduates) were organised in March. The events were attended by 60 alumni and held over two days. The events were part of the development of a new Sports Alumni Group named the ‘Caley Legends’. Overseas Trips GCU Snowsports Club organised a trip to Val Thorens in the French Alps for seventy eight students to enjoy snow sports activities during the inter-semester break (23rd-30th Jan). Additionally, the rugby and hockey clubs organised a Sports Tour to Loret De Mar during the Easter break and 40 students travelled by bus to the resort. City of Glasgow Cup The City of Glasgow Cup is a multi sport student competition between Caledonian, Strathclyde and Glasgow universities, now in its fifth year. The event consists of fixtures in 7 sports including Badminton (mixed), Basketball (m&w), Football (m&w), Hockey (m&w), Netball, Swimming (m&w) and Volleyball (m&w). The competition played over a number of days due to weather constraints and

utilised all three universities sports facilities. The winners of the competition were Strathclyde with Caledonian second. Sports Awards and 13th Annual Ball The 13th Annual Sports Awards Ball took place on Saturday 28th March at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow. 280 students and alumni attended the dinner with the top awards presented to the following students and clubs: Ross Baillie Volunteer Award: Alex Goodman 1st Year Award: Coach of the Year: Team of the Year: Club of the Year: Claire Bannerman (Hockey) Mhairi Green (Horse Riding) Paddy Hastie (Basketball) Men’s Rugby Men’s Rugby

Sports Person of the Year: Lisa Cairns (Karate) This years Sports Person of the Year was 3rd Yr Physiotherapy student Lisa Cairns. Lisa won gold medals at the Scottish and British Universities Karate Championship, the Karate Commonwealth Games and the European Wado Championship. Additionally, Lisa was selected to represent Britain at the World Universities Karate Championship in Poland July 2008.and the World All Styles Championship in Japan in November 2008. Kayaking in Vietnam 3rd year physiotherapy student Tim Hamlet who has been selected to go on the British Universities Kayaking Expedition 2009. Tim travelled to Wales during Semester A for a selection weekend and was one of nine students selected from twenty invited. The expedition plans to go to Vietnam in the summer of 2009 with a view to exploring and experiencing some new white water runs. Athletics Double Gold Two GCU students won gold medals at the Scottish Universities Athletics: Track and Field Championship, the event was held at Grangemouth athletics track on Sunday 12th April. Lisa Glover (2nd Yr Radiography) threw 40.99m in the women’s javelin to win gold and Greg Boyd (1st Yr Construction Management) jumped 1.90m to win the men’s high jump. 800m Win GCU student Donald MacLeod won the 800m at the Scottish Universities Indoor Athletics Freshers Match at the Kelvin Hall on Wednesday 29th October. Donald won in a time of 1.56.2 beating 17 other students into 1st place. Commonwealth Javelin 1st year Diagnostic Radiotherapy student Lisa Glover competed in the Javelin event at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India from 12th to the 18th October. The event had representatives from 71 countries competing in a variety of sports, with Scotland sending 44 young athletes to the games.

Netball Double League Title GCU Netball Team won the 3rd Division in the Glasgow Netball League. The team won 19 out of 20 matches during the season to win the title and promotion to Division 2. Additionally, GCU Netball 1st Team won the BUCS Scottish Conference 3A winning 7 out of 8 matches to clinch the league title and promotion to 2A. British Universities Karate Medals Three GCU students have won medals at the British Universities Karate Championship in Sheffield on the 14th/ 15th March. Lisa Cairns won gold in the senior female under 55kg Kumite, Natalie Wood won a bronze medal in the senior female under 68kg Kumite and Lucasz Sadurek also won a bronze medal for novice male over 80kg Kumite. GCU Karate 2nd at Scottish Universities GCU Karate Club finished second overall at the Scottish Universities Karate Championship on Saturday 18th April, 4 GCU students won 6 individual medals and 1 team medal at the event and the club finishing second behind Edinburgh University. GCU’s Sports Person of the Year 2008/09, Lisa Cairns (3 rd Yr Physiotherapy), won Gold in the Senior Ladies Kumite, Natalie Wood (3rd Yr Physiotherapy) won Bronze in the Senior Ladies Kata, Debbie Lee (2nd Yr Accountancy) won Gold in both Novice Ladies Kumite and Novice Kata and Michael Kay (3rd Yr Sports Management) won Silver in the Intermediate Kumite and Bronze in the Novice Kata. Additionally GCU Ladies Team won Bronze in the Ladies Team Kumite. Hockey League Champions GCU Men’s Hockey won the BUCS Scottish Conference League Divisions 3 with 3 games left to play, the team were undefeated in the league. During the season 3rd Year Optometry student Michael Dorman scored consecutive hat-tricks in three games and not surprisingly Michael is the leading scorer for the team. Basketball League Champions GCU Men’s Basketball Team won the BUCS Scottish Conference League Divisions 3 winning promotion to the next division. Trampolining Synchronised 1st Two GCU students won the synchronised trampolining competition at the recent Irish Student Trampoline Open in Dublin on the 28 th and 29th March. Well done to Jenny Gorman (1st Yr Food Biosciences) and Rachel Silk (3rd Yr Physiotherapy) who were 1st out of the 65 pairs that took part. Scottish Universities Cup Finals Three GCU sports teams competed in Scottish Universities Sport Cup Final matches on Wednesday 24th March in Edinburgh. GCU Men’s Rugby beat

Edinburgh Uni 2nds 24-17, GCU Men’s Football 2nds were beaten by St Andrews Uni 2nds 7-4 and GCU Women’s Football were beaten by Heriot Watt Uni 8-0. Double Ski Gold 2nd year physiotherapy student Michelle Bowman won Slalom Gold at the British University Indoor Ski Championship in Leeds on Wednesday 4th March, she also won gold at the Scottish Universities Outdoor Championships at Cairngorm Mountain Resort on the 28th February. Transport GCUSA has completed the transition to using only hire drive vehicles and no longer owns or contract hires vehicles. This new system will hopefully rationalise the spending in this area. Clubs had a similar number of minibus journeys this year compared to last year. To promote safe driving 24 student drivers completed the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS), a national driver training programme run by the Community Transport Association. Competition Although competition is not a focal point for all activities fourteen of the twentyeight sports clubs participate in competitive fixtures, although the number of fixtures completed has not risen the number of matches won has gone up 15%.
