It is an account of the operation of the Royal Mail train delivery service and shows various stages and procedures of that operation. As the train nears its destination there is a sequence, in which Auden’s spoken verse and Britten’s music are combined over a montage of racing train wheels. In the 20th century the central section of the original route declined and the new section of the ‘Direct’ main line from Brockenhurst rose to prominence in what was known as the golden years of railways.
