ALOHA –IKE AKEA THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL, BETA BETA STATE FOR KEY WOMEN EDUCATORS Volume XLVIII No.1 FALL 2005 President’s Message Aloha, Beta Beta State Sisters, Thank you for your vote of confidence in me. I am honored to be your state president for the next biennium. I will work hard with my team of capable leaders to help make Beta Beta State the best ever. I attended the Leadership Development Seminar from July 11 to 13, 2005 that preceded the Southwest Regional Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The presidents of the Southwest Region learned so much from the leaders about the organization and developing leadership. Did you know that there are 20 states in the United States as well as Latin America in the Southwest Region only? The latest state to join from Latin America is San Luis Potosi. The three keynote speakers at the conference were just excellent and inspiring! Marsha Petrie Sue is a motivational speaker who spoke about “The CEO (Chief Energizing Officer) of You.” She stressed the importance of attitude and team building. Kim Ellis spoke on behalf of Dr. Ruby Payne (detained due to poor weather) about Economic Diversity. Many teachers coming from middle class backgrounds don’t understand the implications of poverty. Lt. Col. Consuelo Kickbusch inspired and touched the audience with her heart-warming story of her life. The Latin American contingent added much color and made the conference so festive! Sharon Inamine, President Beta Beta State Thirteen Beta Beta State sisters who attended the conference are: Ruby Donlin ,Patsy Suyat, and Velma Omura (Delta); Vicki Kajioka and Donna Shiroma (Kappa), Joanne Nakashima (Eta), Peggy Hirata and Pat Park (Epsilon); Nancy Robbins (Zeta), Fay Toyama and Beatrice Zane (Theta); Sarah Moriyama (Lambda) ,and Sharon Inamine (Mu). We sang “Pearly Shells” for the general assembly of 700 while Sarah and Fay danced. The audience joined us in singing the English version of the song! We passed out shell leis as a finale and we were a hit, if I must say so! Our theme of “Moving Forward: Excellence in Action” was emphasized by Jackie Cuppy, our International President. Beta Beta State supports it with our theme of “Na Po’okela:Striving Toward Excellence .” Our Program of Work Chair, Peggy Hirata has been hard at work planning the Fall Board Meeting and Workshop with Kappa co-chairs Carolyn Chang and Hilary Apana-McKee. They are planning an exciting program for you. Please put October 1, 2005 down on your calendar You can register online now! The theme is" Moving Forward: Excellence in Living.” See you at the Fall Workshop. Aloha, Sharon Inamine Excellence in Living—Beta Beta State Fall Workshop The Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Beta State Fall Workshop will be held at the Ala Moana Hotel on Friday and Saturday, September 30 and October 1, 2005.
