Thanks to the interest of our parents, we are scheduling an evening meeting of our PTO on
Wednesday, October 17th at 6pm. On the agenda: Treasurer’s report, volunteer
opportunities, bond information. Coffee and Sweet Charity’s homemade cinnamon rolls,
muffins and cookies provided. (my kinda dinner)
PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING!!
If you would like to become a part of a parent advisory committee to the superintendent,
please join me Thursday, October 18th at 6pm at the Administration building for our first
meeting for the school year.
STEP-UP FOR CAMP COLTON!!
Mountain Sports at 24 N San Francisco will donate $40 to Camp Colton
for each pair of Patagonia shoes purchased at Mountain Sports through
Thursday, October 18th.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FRIDAY MORNING!!
We are currently looking for any parent volunteers to help us run the concession stand
during game times after school. You can come in at lunch to get it set up if you like. It’s
fun!!! Contact Mr. Howard at 527-5513 if you can help us out. The next envelope volunteer
opportunity will be Friday, October 19th at 7:40am until about 10:30am.
We are currently having a fundraiser to help our own student, Jake Seff, raise money for his
Step Out Walk to Help Stop Diabetes. All first period classes are participating. The class
that raises the most money by this Friday, will win a pizza party!
EAT AT COCO's – SUPPORT SMS !!
Eat at Coco's on Forest Meadows and put your receipt in the
lovely Sinagua Middle School box behind the cash register. We
get 10%. No cost to you!! We will also benefit from an all-day
fundraiser on Friday, October 26th. Put your receipt in our box! We get 25% that day!!
Girls Basketball applications are due Friday, October 26th. See the website for
applications and requirements. Students may pick up applications in the front office.
MUSTANG ROUNDUP CHALLENGE DAY!!
Site Council is planning a fun day for students to raise money for the school. Activities are
planned for Tuesday, October 30th. We need your help!! We are asking for donations
of prizes for students who raise money. We also need 8 adults EACH HOUR to help
that day at each activity so students can enjoy the challenges. If you can SPARE AN
HOUR at 10am for 6th graders, 12 noon for 7th graders and/or 1pm for 8th graders
let me know.
SMS, STEM AND MITe PIZZA FUNDRAISER!!
Join us at Peter Piper Pizza on November 2nd -- all day (must
mention SMS or bring flyer) Students that show up with a sticker
(ALL SMS students will get these) will get 10 free tokens!! STEM
activities sponsored by STEM Club and MITe from 4-6pm 15% of
sales will go to SMS -- with $$$ split equally between SMS, STEM
Club, and MITe!!

Citizens will have an opportunity to vote on a capital bond for the primary purposes of
facilities, student technology and student transportation equipment. Factual information

HOLIDAY CRAFT BAZAAR!!
We are taking reservations for artists and crafters who would like a space at our awesome
Craft Bazaar the first weekend in December. Call Lydia at 853-6458. We are also looking for
volunteers to help set up. There are also many volunteer jobs available for that day. Our
school benefits from this fabulous event!!

HELP IS NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE BOND!!
If you are interested in helping to get the information out about the bond, there are several
ways to do that. You can contribute to fundraising to purchase signs, buttons and print
material. You can join the phone bank and/or neighborhood canvasing. You can help
distribute signs and buttons. You can write a letter to the editor. Just 250 words, doesn't
have to be brilliant, just heart-felt. They have editors on-hand to help if you want. You can
change your Facebook profile pic to the YesForFUSD logo. If you would like more information you

FUSD BOND SIGNS AVAILABLE!!
The small YESforFUSD window signs are IN!!! (8x10 size) They are perfect
for your car window, prominent window of your home, or business windows! We would love
your help in getting them out and about town! Please limit yourself to a maximum of 20
signs unless you are confident you can pass out more! There are also buttons available for
the taking but please only take a few! You may pick up YESforFUSD signs at 3 different
locations. We will place the signs at our front door and you can pick them up at your
convenience. Please forward this email to anyone you know who would be willing to display
or disseminate the signs. Bigger yard signs are available as well! Let me know if you would
like signs and/or buttons.
HEALTH NOTES FROM NURSE BRAIN!!
Nurse Brain is working on getting all the students to be in compliance with their
immunizations .... So here is a friendly reminder to let parents know if your student is 11
years old they need to get their Tdap and MCV to be able to be in public school in
the state of Arizona. The Tdap is for tetanus and the MCV is for Meningitis. Please feel
free to call the health office at 527-5502 for any questions regarding this matter, Nurse
Brain is happy to help you. Get your printable 10 Ways to stay healthy this winter to put on
your fridge or mirror.
LOST AND FOUND!!
It’s getting chilly out and we are accumulating quite a few jackets in lost and found.
Parents need to write their student’s name in their jackets so we can return any that we
find. The rest of the collection will go to the Family Resource Center during Winter Break.
By the way, you may donate any clothing to the Family Resource Center, especially dress
code clothes your student outgrows. If you know of a family that has a student who needs
a jacket for winter, let the office know. They will call the student to the office discreetly and
let them choose a jacket in our donation collection. 527-5500.
FRY’S COOL CASH PROGRAM IS HERE!!
We have spent almost $9,500 in the first 31 days of the program towards our goal
of $50,000. We have 52 cards linked! That’s great but we need more! Don’t forget
to have the checker scan the bar code to link it with your Fry’s card. Then give
the bar code to friends and family. You can also get the bar code
on our website. The more people who sign up to support SMS, the

We rank #7 in our area but we are about to jump to the head of the
pack thanks to you sending in your box tops and to Kellie Norris for

Home court Advantage Leadership rules apply to all school activities and venues and should

THURSDAYS ARE REALLY COOL AT MIDDLE SCHOOL BUT – IT’S NOT A GREAT DAY
TO GET YOUR CHILD OUT OF CLASS!!
Thursdays after 1:00 pm will be used as a time of enrichment for students who need help
on a particular concept. Students who don’t need tutoring that week can go to a pathways
selection. Students could be all over the campus (both inside or outside), so if you need to
check-out your son or daughter for an appointment, please allow 10-15 minutes extra time
when requesting them!!
DON’T FORGET YOUR LANYARD!!
We can’t deliver all the lanyards parents bring in to the students who forget them! Please
help your student learn to be responsible for their lanyards. By the time you bring it in for
them, they already have ETL.
CALL THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE WHEN YOUR STUDENT IS ABSENT!!
You must call Jan at 527-5510 when your student is absent. Leave a detailed message that
explains the absence. Also include if your student has a fever or contagious symptoms. If
your student is already on campus and needs to leave, you must come into the attendance
office to sign them out. If you are going to be gone for more than 10 days, a petition must
be filed with the attendance office.
YEARBOOKS PREPAYMENTS WELCOME!!
Yearbooks may be prepaid in the bookstore for $35. Buy now as the price goes up as the
year goes on.
CHARACTER COUNTS PROGRAM CONTINUES!!
The character trait for October is Inquiring. How does your
family encourage inquiring? Talk about it with your student.
Inquiring means: Showing an interest in learning new things.
Students will be nominated for their expressions of character
throughout the year and can earn pins for their lanyards and a
EARLY RELEASE IS EVERY WEDNESDAY AT 1PM!!
Please be prepared! Class will be dismissed every Wednesday at 1pm for the entire year
unless we are on a snow delay schedule. Bussing will be available as well as the Campus Y
TAX CREDIT DONATIONS!!
Start making payments to your favorite extracurricular activity now. Online Tax
Credit Payments are up and going!! To access the online payment system you click on the
Tax Credit Donation link on the front of the FUSD webpage, this takes you to the Finance
Department page; then click on the Online Tax Credit Donation link on the left side of the
page. This page has a Donate button for all of the schools. These payments will be
processed and receipts sent out directly by the Business Office.

Did you know there is an item exchange on the first block of second street
right off of route 66? Drop off used or outgrown clothing and/or take
clothing you need. Check it out!
Don't forget to bring us your age appropriate books and magazines for the Books In the
Cafeteria. I have seen the list of students checking out books and it is really popular!
Reading is, after all, key in our success at anything.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF FLAGSTAFF IS NOW OPEN!!
Serving youth between the ages of 6 and 18, the club provides a safe and
welcoming place for youth to enjoy their time outside of school. Open Monday-

Good Evening Sinagua Mustangs! This is Principal Popham calling with the weekly events at Sinagua for the
week of Oct. 15-19th. Monday marks the start of our second quarter. New schedules with quarter class
changes will be available in the commons in the morning on Monday for all students to pick up. Mark your
calendars as the MUSTANG ROUND UP CHALLENGE is right around the corner. This is our fundraising
school wide challenge that will occur on October 30th. Information will be coming home on the 19th for all
parents to view. Volleyball and Cross country continue all week with cross country having their Middle
school championships at 10:00 on Saturday the 20th. On Monday, there will be 6th grade
homework club, math tutoring, english tutoring, and Mite Club all after school from 2:30-4.
Tuesday there will be 6th grade homework club, STEM club and the Literacy Committee will be
meeting after school. Also on Tuesday evening, our Choir and Symphonic band will be having their
first concert of the season. This event starts at 6:30 and you should all plan on attending this fabulous
event. On Wednesday, our 8th grade students will be taking the ACT Explore test in the morning.
A parent information form was given to students on Wednesday of this past week to inform you of what this
test is for, why we give it and what we can see and plan for with the results. Attention parents...PTO will
have a meeting at 6 p.m. at Sinagua to discuss bond information. On Thursday, our students will be
participating in the Great Arizona Shakeout. This is sponsored by the state and will occur at 10:15
statewide. Students will participate in proper ways to respond to earthquake situations. Also on
Thursday, there will be 6th grade homework club, Native American club and Oceanography club
after school from 2:30-4. Friday, the chess club will meet after school and our band students have been
invited to participate in playing at the CHS football game. Any band student wanting to do so will have a
great time seeing what it is like be part of the Coconino Music program. Finally, The mail-in ballots for the
the November 6th elections were sent out on Oct. 11th. and you have until Oct. 24th to submit your
ballot my mail. There are important educational issues, including Question #1-FUSD Bond on the
November 6th ballot. Please also be aware that if you live within Flagstaff Unified School District boundaries
the bond question will be on your ballot. You do not have to live within the city limits of Flagstaff to be
