					Supplies List Thurgood Marshall 7th and 8th grade Band 2008-2009 All supplies are needed by September 4, 2008

1. Book (Required) Textbook: Standard of Excellence Book 2 (Enhanced Book) (by Bruce Pearson) at any of the following music stores in the area:  Music and Arts – Bowie, MD  O’Neils Music – Waldorf, MD  Dale Music – Silver Spring, When needed: (September 4, 2008) 2. Instrument (Required) You may purchase or rent an instrument at any music store. I have attached a coupon for 1 music store in the area that is offering specials. Please try to obtain an instrument on your own, if not possible, inform me ASAP so that I can assign a school instrument (quantities of school instruments are limited and type of instrument is limited) Student will need instrument in order to participate in class grade by September 2, 2008. School issued instruments: Those receiving school instruments will be required to have the parents complete and sign a Loan form before instrument will be issued. Additionally, since there is a limited number of instruments, students will be issued instruments that are available and also fit with the needs of the band organization to provide the best sound for the group. Percussion/Drummers: In order to achieve proper balance for the best sound, there will be a limit of 4 percussionists per class. All others will need to learn to play a wind instrument (brass or woodwind). 3. 5 Pencils (NO PENS/NO Markers/NO crayons/NO Colored pencils/etc. are ALLOWED) - Required Five (5) pencils with a good eraser (in a pencil holder) 4. Notebook (3-ring) with dividers (Required) This is to keep any music theory worksheets, handouts, written homework, etc. organized. (students will be given paper folders for holding MUSIC, BAND BOOK, AND MUSIC DICTIONARY (to be issued in the folder)). 5. Agenda Book (purchased through school)- (Required) 1. OTHER INSTRUMENT SPECIFIC SUPPLIES (look at list that applies to the instrument your are playing or have been assigned)-REQUIRED Woodwind Instruments Flutes:

Personal swab (or handkerchief) to dry inside of instrument after use. Clarinets/Saxophones:  A Box of reeds (size 2 ½)– Purchase a box ( (clarinets and saxes) and always have 3 good ones in case at all times) Buy reeds in quantity because they break, chip or split often. Reeds do NOT last long, especially with young players, they break often.  Brand names for Clarinet Reeds: Rico, Vandoren, LaVoz, Mitchell Lurie  Brand names for Saxophone Reeds: Rico, LaVoz, Hemke, Vandoren  Your own mouthpiece (for clarinet/saxophone)  Personal cork grease ($1-$2 approx. cost) and polishing cloth to care for exterior of instrument  Neck straps (saxophones) – NOT optional  Swabs/soft cloth to remove moisture from inside instrument (to protect from costly repairs later on)  Music and Arts – Bowie, MD  O’Neils Music – Waldorf, MD  Dale Music – Silver Spring, MD  Hot Licks Guitar Store (limited selection of supplies)– Waldorf, MD  Washington Music Center – Wheaton, MD Oboes/Bassoons:  2 good Medium hardness reeds  Small container to store reed (such as an old/completely wash prescription bottle)  Personal cork grease ($1-$2 approx. cost) and polishing cloth to care for exterior of instrument  Neck straps (bassoons) – NOT optional  Swabs/soft cloth to remove moisture from inside instrument (to protect from costly repairs later on)  Music and Arts – Bowie, MD  O’Neils Music – Waldorf, MD  Dale Music – Silver Spring, MD  Hot Licks Guitar Store (limited selection of supplies)– Waldorf, MD  Washington Music Center – Wheaton, MD Brass Instruments Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Baritone, and French Horn:

Your Own Valve Oil (to keep valves lubricated, keep from sticking and ending up sending to repair shop)-COOKING OIL/VEGETABLE/OLIVE OIL/CRISCO/ETC. IS NEVER TO BE USED FOR AN INSTRUMENT!! IT WILL DAMAGE IT! (Trombones only) trombone slide cream – for lubricating the slides Polishing cloth for brass instruments (keep instrument from tarnishing quickly…prolong life of instrument) Your OWN mouthpiece Suggested Mouthpiece: (can be purchased at any music store) + Bach 7c (or equivalent) – for trumpet + Bach 6 ½ AL (or equivalent) – for trombone and baritone + Bach 18 (or equivalent) – for tuba + the standard mouthpiece – for French Horn

Percussionists: REQUIRED!!  All percussion students will be taught how to care for the instruments properly  If it is determined that major damage occurred due to negligence on the part of the child (example: playing around, careless handling, vandalism, etc), then parent is responsible for additional repair costs.  Your own pair of snare sticks 2B  Your own pair of xylophone mallets -not an option A stick bag to carry them in -put your name on the bag      Stores in area where supplies can be purchased Music and Arts – Bowie, MD O’Neils Music – Waldorf, MD Dale Music – Silver Spring, MD Hot Licks Guitar Store (limited selection of supplies)– Waldorf, MD Washington Music Center – Wheaton, MD

All Percussionists are required to take care of all additional equipment that are provided by the band (that are not required for purchase). Percussion students will rotate and play the different concert instruments. If the band issued timpani (kettle drum) mallets, and other drum equipment are damaged due to neglect (example: laying on the floor where stick is broken or the felt/fir head of mallet begins to come off, pulling the fuzzy part of the mallet until it comes off, ), then the person assigned the mallet/equipment on that day will be required to purchase a replacement. 2.
