BACKING UP WORDPRESS affilo BLUEPRINT

In this lesson we’re going to be looking at backing up Wordpress. We’re going to be looking at
why you need to back up your site, backing up with AffiloTheme, backing up self-hosted sites,
   and common questions.

   In this Lesson

            • Why back up your site?
            • Backing up with AffiloTheme
            • Backing up self-hosted sites
            • Common questions.

   Why Back Up Your Site?

Well the Wordpress database actually can become corrupted. There could be some sort of server
failure, or maybe your site could even get hacked. It’s not that likely, but it can happen, and it
does happen. You may need to change web hosts perhaps and you might have trouble
migrating. If you don’t have a back up, things can get tricky.

   Backing Up With Affilotheme

To back up within AffiloTheme simply click on the website ‘Admin’ link as in the screen-shot below.

You then click on the ‘Backup’ button as in the screenshot below.

Then you click ‘Request Website Backup’.

It will take a bit of time and then eventually you’ll see in the available back up area the words
‘Backup Created’ and the date. From here you can download it.

We only store the back up for 24 hours. After that time it’s deleted, and that’s for security reasons.

      Backing Up Self-Hosted Sites

Now the next question everybody is going to be asking is ‘but what if you’re not using AffiloTheme
      – how do you back up your website?’

Well there are plugins that will do this for you, but there are two problems that arise here. Free
Wordpress plugins tend to be good at backing up either your files, or the Wordpress database,
but not both at the same time, and remember that your Wordpress site is basically split in two.
There are the files you upload and create, and then there are the core database files. Having to
use two free plugins to each back up half of the site is really frustrating, because things can get
lost or mucked up really easily if you ever have to rely on the back up.

And then there are ‘paid’ plugins. There are some good paid plugins for backing up self-hosted
Wordpress sites. One of these is ‘BackUp Buddy’. They are expensive however and you might
not have the budget to afford one.

However there is a way round this problem. If you are self-hosting your Wordpress site then you
probably have a hosting account with a company like Hostgator. And the good news is that most
hosting companies use a platform called CPanel which is short for Control Panel. That makes it
really easy to back up your site.

What you do is go to your hosting provider’s website and find the option to login to your ‘c Panel’.

When you login this is what your C Panel or Control Panel will look like.

Depending on what host you’re using, things may display a little differently, but it shouldn’t be too
difficult to navigate your way around.

What you do then is click on ‘Back Up Wizard’ which should be in a little area called ‘Files’.

Once you click on that, you’ll be taken to a page that shows ‘Step 1 - Backup and Restore’.

Now you click on the link that says ‘Backup’. Obviously if you were trying to restore your website
then you’d be clicking the ‘Restore button. But in this case we’re backing up your site so you click
    ‘Backup’.

Now you can pick between a few different options. What we want to do is create a ‘full backup’
rather than just the ‘home directory’ or ‘MySQL databases’.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand what all this means because you don’t need to understand it
yet. Just click on the ‘Full Backup’ button and continue.

Now all you have to do is pick a backup destination. Choose the home directory, then enter your
email address. Click ‘Generate Backup’ to finish. Once the backup is complete the details will
be emailed through to your account.

   Common Questions About Backups

There are two very common questions about backups which we answer below.

   Q. How often should I be backing up my website?

Well if you’re not sure then I reckon once a week is good, especially if you’re adding lots of new
content or experimenting with different plugins. At the very least you should do a back up once a
month. You should also make a back up before any major site update or change.

   Q. Where should I store my backup files?

Well you can just leave them on your computer hard drive in a folder, that’s fine. But I would
suggest that once every so often you back them up to a CD or USB drive or external hard drive
just in case your computer crashes. Also you could consider investing a little bit in some online
storage space for your back ups, just so you spread the risk a little bit. It will obviously become
more and more important as you make more money.

            Homework

Well there are no surprises as to what your homework is.

                     • Back up your Wordpress site using one of the methods I described in this lesson.
                     • Make sure you’re doing this on a regular basis so that you always have a recent
copy of your site backed up just in case.
