FINDING A DOMAIN NAME affilo BLUEPRINT

Hello everybody you’re listening to Mark Ling and welcome back to Affilobleuprint. In this video
we’re going to be looking at finding a domain name.

In this lesson, you’re going to learn:

             • How to get great ideas for domain names
             • What to watch out for when choosing a domain name
             • How to actually go about purchasing a domain name.

    What is a domain name?
Every website has a unique ID; it’s a bit like a telephone number, and it’s called an IP address. It’s
    a collection of numbers like

                                                   64.225.155.30.

What a domain name does is it redirects to your IP address. It’s basically an easy-to-remember
address that can be punched into an address bar to send people to your website or IP address.

    Choosing a domain name

When it comes to choosing a domain name you’ll want to use a pen and paper and write down
any ideas that you may have to do with the keywords or to do with the topic that you’re website’s
about. You may wish to use websites like nameboy.com.

You may want to use Traffic Travis Version 4, which has a really awesome domain finder tool in
    there.

To use the domain finder in Traffic Travis, you type in keywords that are relevant to the website that
    you’re creating.

For example, I’m creating a website to do with enlightenment, to do with the law of attraction,
personal development that kind of thing, so I type in the keywords enlightenment, law of attraction,
hit “fetch” and I get dozens and dozens of ideas

e.g. enlightenmentdirect.com superenlightenment, bestenlightenment, selfhelpenlightenment, and
all sorts of ideas like that.

Any time I like a particular word or domain, I just click on the tick next to it, like superenlightenment,
and that adds it to my domain shortlist as you can see, superenlightenment is right there in my
domain shortlist, I’ve shortlisted attractiondirect, enlightenmentgateway and so forth.

When you have picked a domain name, you just tick the domain you want to purchase, and then you
can select to register with Affilorama Domains (or you can use the drop down box to pick GoDaddy,
other domain registrars, or just go straight to your preferred registrar)

If you were to select the Affilorama Domains, you will see it costs about $10 per year. We’ve set the
domains at 0% commission for us, so they’re going to be as low as what our provider will let us sell
them for, and we’re trying to pass on the savings to you.

In this case enlightenmentgateway.com is my domain of choice so I am going to buy that at $9.99
per year.

You click ‘Add’, right there, and then you go and click Continue to Registration.

Then if you’re already a customer you just login - or you can create your own domain registration
information, by entering in your First Name, Email Address and so forth.

 Things to watch out for

Are you using trademarked terms? For example, if you’re promoting Rocket Spanish then registering
a domain name like rocketspanishreview.com may not be a good idea because it’s against the terms
and conditions of that affiliate program provider. I actually co-own Rocket Spanish, but this is just an
example, and other affiliate programs do have similar terms and conditions.

You can just go to uspto.gov and see if they have actually trademarked their name. It’s better not to
go after trademarked names. You can still rank highly for the product name without having to have
their trademarked name in your .com. The last thing you want to do is be sent a legal notice and get
told you have to take your website down. Also watch out for hard-to-spell domain names, because
it’s hard for people to remember it and come back to it in the future.

  Common Questions

Q: Is it better to have a .com, .net or .org?

A: I find it’s better to have a .com, they’re more recognized as domain names, people are used to
seeing them more than .net. .orgs are usually for if you have a charity or something like that, or some
sort of non-profit organization, but if it’s trying to make a profit I’d go with .coms if I were you.

Q: When is it appropriate to get a localized domain name?

A: If you are promoting a particular product that is local (for instance if you are a hairdresser and
you’re setting up a hairdressing site for local hairdressers) then you’ll probably want a .co.nz if you
live in New Zealand. If you live in Australia then you’d want a .com.au, or co.uk if you live in the
  United Kingdom

It’s appropriate only if what you’ve got on your site is locally based. So it’s a good idea then to
register your local-based domain and get your website in the local directories to boost up your
search engine rankings in the local areas.

As an affiliate sometimes, you might want to promote offers only available only in the UK. Some
Cost-per-acquisition offers, for instance some dating sites are only for UK singles, then you’ll
probably want to register a .co.uk domain.

Q: How much do domain names normally cost?

A: Usually around $10 a year, give or take a couple of dollars.

Q: Should I buy a domain with my hosting?

A: Well you can do, but quite often that costs more than if you buy the domain separately. In this
video I’ve shown you how to buy it separately, and it’s straightforward.

Q: Should I use hyphens in a domain name?

A: You can if you want to, though I prefer not to myself. This is partly because sometimes there is a
reason why the actual .com is taken, it’s because quite often it’s trademarked as well, and you don’t
want to get into any trouble. If someone owns stopdogproblems.com and you go and get
stop-dog-problems.com, you don’t want to get in trouble later on when they go ahead and say
they’ve already trademarked their domain and so on and you’ve got something that’s too similar.
Again, check uspto.gov to see if anything’s been trademarked

Q: Do I need to have keywords in my domain name?

A: You don’t have to, but being an affiliate it can help and it can make your site seem more
theme-relevant when someone’s browsing for it and they see it in the search engines but no, it’s not
a definite necessity, that’s for sure.
